Proshippers do not say that at all, and in fact frequently have to clear up accusations that we don't think fiction affects reality whatsoever. We know it does. We just also know that it does not have a 1:1 cause-effect influence on reality like antis say it does.

Like, my God, you claim to hate both but you clearly have only been actually listening to antis if you think proshippers are really like that.

I follow both pro and anti shippers just to see both perspectives, after I was in the VLD fandom for over a year also interacting with both groups extensively because my ship wasn’t directly related. I largely see the proshippers saying fiction does not impact reality at all. Except when their ship could revolutionize mlm rep in children’s media. I’d love to see a more nuanced, reasonable approach from them, but I haven’t seen it. Maybe I’m just unlucky? I haven’t seen many nuanced approaches from anti shippers either, to be clear.

NAYRT.

I always love the irony of that 'fiction doesn't affect reality!... Until it matters to ME' which is what those arguments always boil down to on either side.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

That’s always very fascinating to see. This ship is fine because fiction doesn’t affect reality but also this ship should be canon because fiction does affect reality. And I absolutely see the same people making both arguments. Which is it then?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
SA.

Ha right? It doesn't work both ways at all, either none of it matters or it does and the conversation is complicated as to how/why. But no, it only affects reality if they like it and if they don't, or don't care, then it doesn't.

It must vary from fandom to fandom - I don't go to VLD, but I'm told that fandom is a bit of a wretched hive. All of the decent points I've seen from proshippers have been from a non-specific-fandom perspective.

Re: OP

Mostly what I've osmosed from Voltron fandom is that antis went rabid about "incest" and "pedophilia" over a ship between two young adults that isn't either of those things. It's where they really started getting completely absurd, and scary about it.

I'm not in that fandom but it was hard to miss anyway.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
i will never not feel anything other than indescribable rage over all the

'it doesn't matter that adam died bc he was unimportant/it's JUST fiction/the REAL mlm rep is coming!!!'

vs

'omg sheith NEEDS to be canon for mlm everywhere bc rep is IMPORTANT'

i'm so happy they got spat in the face, i just wish a decent m/m ship had actually come out of that clusterfuck of a show. :\

I largely see the proshippers saying fiction does not impact reality at all.

You are very much not the only one. This is the take I see from the vast majority of pro-shippers as well. I take a YKINMKATIOK stance, but I do find the "fiction has NO impact on reality" stance a LOT of pro-shippers take to be dogmatic and off-putting in its own right.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I envy the world you live in, where nobody ever makes terrible arguments for a position you agree with.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking THIS.

"Nobody ever made terrible arguments for a position you agreed with," is like the "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt" of the 21st century.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
And it must be pretty miserable living in your world, where you spew pure hate for every group and person who doesn't 100% with every single one of your opinions. Must be pretty lonely.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
How on earth did you get any of this projection shit from this post? You seem pretty miserable yourself.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
From your very own secret. Don't dish out the "I hate them so much and I wish they'd die" hyperbole if you can't handle a bit of hyperbole directed your own way.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the Secret maker, but nice try.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry you apparently don't know what "OP" means? Or are too lazy to add a nayrt if you're a different anon. And the point still stands whether you made the secret or not. Maybe read a thread and the secret it belongs to before you whine.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what both OP and NAYRT, but I'm not used to using the terminology regularly because I'm new here. So that is my fault for making things unclear as a result.

But considering you thought you were talking to the Secret OP, your point doesn't still stand. Semantics, I know. Also, me disagreeing with you that the OP seems miserable and hateful isn't really whining.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, even in hyperbolic fashion "I hate them and they should die" doesn't come about as chill and mellow to me but you do you. And I was originally talking to OP in the comment you replied to.

I have literally seen threads upon threads on both tumblr and twitter about how fiction has no affect on reality what so ever and that fiction is not influenced by real life either. And these aren't small posts, they get hundreds of notes justifying someone taking out of their ass because they're so bothered by a dumb kid being weirded out by something they ship, instead of locating the block button and moving on with life because who actually cares what a teenager thinks of you?

Both camps are full of idiots who put far too much of themselves into the fiction they consume to the point where they need to attack others over it or defend it like they're being personally attacked. Everyone involved in these arguments needs to step back from the computer for at least 10 mins and go do literally anything else. Stare at the wall for an hour, it'd be a more productive use of time.

And these aren't small posts, they get hundreds of notes

lolwut

that's... basically nothing. I have five followers who aren't pornbots, and I've had posts get that big. hundreds of notes? dear lord, call the papers~

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Seems pretty convenient that a couple of hundred notes is "basically nothing" to you. Maybe it's not a viral post, but it proves something that you clearly can't admit about this vocal minority.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god. Look, I just opened Tumblr, and the first post on my dash was a text post. It's pretty short, so I'm just gonna copy-paste it.
What I would give to eat lunch with my friends in school and peel the sticker off my fruit and put it on their clothes and say "you cost 60 cents" or "you're a pear." I miss that.

That post has 28,793 notes. In internet terms, your "vocal minority" is as meaningful as the man standing on the street corner shouting about lizardmen from the moon. That's not a position that needs to be refuted by considered debate, it just needs to be laughed at and then ignored.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You really believe that nobody could have a negative experience with proshippers strongly enough that you compare someone trying to tell an anecdote about it to conspiracy theorists? Nobody is really saying(in good faith) that pros are on the same level as antis. But you're resisting the thought that any individuals could be bad so hard, it seems strange. And you're using numbers of notes as some kind of ridiculous proof, like conservative assholes bragging about "ratios" on Twitter.

And it's also a bit disingenuous to compare the audience for funny textposts(one of the only fun things on Tumblr most of the time) to shipping politics. That's why I called the people that tell their experiences with individually bad proshippers a vocal minority. Because they're a very tiny part of the whole conversation. Probably because there is significantly less stories to tell compared to anti horror stories. But you refuse to believe any of them could be telling the truth, just because a niche part of the shipping community... is niche.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
Proshippers argue in favor of explicit RPF of underage celebrities. I've seen celebrities give interviews about being bullied and harassed by people who find these materials online and show it to them and their friends and loved ones. Youtubers and twitch streamers get people begging them to read explicit fanfiction of themselves all the time, and it's bad enough when the celebrity is an adult, but minors shouldn't have to suffer through this.

On the other hand, antis come up with the most ridiculous ideas of what makes someone a pedophile, and I've seen some even argue that anyone who's a fan of villainous characters or who kills NPCs in a video game is a Dangerous Monster, and I personally know some of them who have defended actual real life pedophiles, because "he said he was sowwy and it was a long time ago anyway!!!". Both sides are such shit, I don't root for either.
