Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

Just because you're angry at antis doesn't mean that child-coding doesn't exist.

Sincerely,
Someone who tried to get back into anime but got immediately confronted again by how some anime fans really bend over backwards to justify the gross decisions of a mangaka.

Bonus secret: I think the younger side of fandom is more vocal about pedophilia and sexual harassment as humor in fiction because they're still reading manga and watching shonen. And while it isn't the case for all anime of course, it is a big enough problem to be infuriating. Looking over old anime as an adult is a trip. "Like okay this show is good, but now the main character is going to rape a woman, and like it has no actual importance in the story? He's still a good guy? No consequences or meaning? Okay."

[Fandom: anime in general]

Where did you get "I'm angry at antis because I want to defend 'gross' decisions of mangaka" from "I'm disturbed that fandom has decided characters with traits common in autistic people, like me, must be children."

If this is same anon as below, then I have answered this there. I'm not referring to your secret so much as at least one sentiment in the replies of yours and other previous secrets that felt like to me that child-coding is just silly anti nonsense. No harm intended... orz

OP of the "child-coded" secret

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck's sake

I'm not saying that it doesn't exist or it's not a thing to worry about. I'm not saying that people aren't gross with young characters or try to come up with stupid as fuck excuses for it.

What I'm saying is that people abuse that critcism to be ableist toward autistic adult characters. Arguing that an autistic adult is like a child and can't be shipped with anyone bc they're too innocent or childlike or just aren't mentally an adult is FUCKING ABLEIST AS HELL. And these attitudes aren't just toward fictional characters I have experienced people making arguements to me that I am not able to consent despite being a fucking adult.

For the love of God I just don't wanna be called or compared to a pedophile because I like the idea of an autistic adult in a functional relationship.

I'm going to reply to this because I don't want you thinking that I'm specifically popping off against you. I saw your secret, and a couple of previous other ones (such as the FF14 about Lalafell). I didn't really mind the secrets' contents themselves (I saw where OP was coming from), so much as the replies in the secrets where some folks insisted that child-coding is bullshit that doesn't exist. Perhaps that's not what those anons intended, and maybe it's worded in a way that makes it seem to me like they don't believe it happens at all. Maybe! I'll give some slack if that's the case!

However it comes usually in the same sentiment/breath as "those dang crazy antis on tumblr and twitter are at it again! 'Child-coding' doesn't exist!" (in my opinion in which I'm giving slack on in case I'm misinterpreting things). The last secret today was another anti-anti secret that somewhat touched on underage themes, and I remembered my thoughts about how I felt that child-coding is a valid concept that isn't solely used by antis to describe things.

I apologize for making you feel under attack when really I had no problem with your secret about autistic people, which I am myself. I'm bothered by antis being used as a boogeyman to put down literary analysis.

Allright

I apologize for my manner of replying.

"Like okay this show is good, but now the main character is going to rape a woman, and like it has no actual importance in the story? He's still a good guy? No consequences or meaning? Okay."

What's that from?

Royal Space Force.

Non anime example just for funsies: Bladerunner.

Thanks.

I already knew about Blade Runner. It's for that reason that I hate that movie.

DA - Yeah, the rape in Blade Runner really ruins it for me. It's just so blatant (while simultaneously being so oblivious).

Child-coding doesn't exist, though. A character either is a child or isn't a child.

I'm frustrated with using 'child-coding' in criticism because even in the examples you can point to where that label is accurate, the problematic element can and should be addressed in much more direct terms. It's pedophilia, it's power imbalance, it's abuse... just call it what is is. Child-coding is pussyfooting language that obfuscates the real issue.

Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I can actually respect this point of view, but I will still defend the use of the term child-coding.

I think that child-coding can cut through the evasiveness of some content creators when they say stuff like their 7 year-old-looking succubus is actually 5,000 years-old despite wearing a pacifier as a necklace or something. It's a Doyalist response to a Watsonian defense. It cuts through the pussyfooting by bringing in all of the issues associated with sexualizing a child in an simple package.

"lol the author wants to fuck a kid." Why say more words when less is more?

See, I don't even consider the anime trope of 5000-year-old little girls a proper example of child-coding, such as it is. Those characters are children, and the technical age is a transparent excuse. There's nothing evasive about. It's like a well-established joke at this point. Attraction to such characters is still creepy, but falls under the same moral grey area of all attraction to fictional underage characters. Nobody actually thinks the *age* is what makes it okay.

Child-coding is more accurate in situations where characters have the appearance of grown adults but exhibit the behavior and mindset of children. That's maybe the only place where the term is useful, because on the surface there's nothing wrong with these relationships, but there are problematic implications. But that's where misuse comes in as well, as people lump in neuroatypical characters or just characters they don't want to see shipped a certain way.

You've got it all wrong. The attractiveness of 500 year old lolis is that they are older than they look. How do I know this? Because I'm attracted to them, but -- yeah yeah lock me up, but get this first -- I'm NOT attracted to child anime characters who are actually the age they look and act like children! Ancient beings in children's bodies, beings that don't exist for real, are attractive. Children aren't.

Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2021-03-21 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I don't know a single person who is into the idea of loli/shota who has any interest in actual children, the appeal for them is the childlike body with an adult mind. They'd be grossed out by a character who both looked AND acted like an actual child.
