This is only half-related to your secret, but I wanted to ship Gene and Finny so bad when I had to read A Separate Peace. The book's just too depressing to really think about shipping though.

I read that book when I was in...idk, 8th? 9th? grade, not for school but just because it was there in the house, and I primarily remember a) having a HUGE literary crush on Finny, and consequently being totally crushed by That Ending and b) being really confused about why the narrator was acting like he acted. I didn't find out about the gay aspect/reading until years later and then suddenly point b was a lot less confusing lol

The funniest thing in 10th grade did have to be right before reading a Separate Peace. The literature teacher being like "I don't agree with the opinion that they were gay, but if you can properly defend it, it is an acceptable opinion."

That was my first intro to conflicting analyses of works

I went to a catholic school, so I couldn't write my analysis that they were gay :(. I had to opt for "Finny was a figment of Gene's imagination" with the implication Gene was hiding his true (gay) self.
