This is only half-related to your secret, but I wanted to ship Gene and Finny so bad when I had to read A Separate Peace. The book's just too depressing to really think about shipping though.

I read that book when I was in...idk, 8th? 9th? grade, not for school but just because it was there in the house, and I primarily remember a) having a HUGE literary crush on Finny, and consequently being totally crushed by That Ending and b) being really confused about why the narrator was acting like he acted. I didn't find out about the gay aspect/reading until years later and then suddenly point b was a lot less confusing lol
