Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

I watched the first Kingsman movie for the first time last night and I’m so annoyed at that stupid “Eggsy fucks a princess” joke. I’m annoyed because it was sexist and sleazy, but I’m more annoyed because I feel like it ruined Eggsy’s entire character arc.

His whole thing was that he was basically whatever the British version of sub-trailer trash is, but that at his core he was a person of integrity. Yeah, he was rough as shit around the edges, but in his own way he kept it classy, despite the fact that his life was trying to beat that out of him. And becoming an Kingsman empowered him in a way that allowed him to embody that inner integrity and classiness more fully.

So to have him ass-fuck a random princess after she literally tells him it’s a prize for saving the world (and he doesn’t even turn off his spy camera ffs!)—it basically ruins his entire arc for me. (And I liked most of the rest of the movie, so it felt like a slap in the face to have it half-way ruined by such a stupid thing at the very last moment.)

Ugh, agree. I was enjoying the movie up to that point, but that made it feel as if I'd been on a run outdoors and then stepped in dogshit right as I was turning to my home street.

I guess it's my own fault for watching something created by Mark Millar.

Lol! This describes the feeling perfectly!

It ruined the movie for me too anon, for all the reasons you've stated. I loved virtually everything else about it, but that last scene completely trashed it for me and I haven't rewatched it since.

In retrospect, I think it was supposed to be his fully fledged James Bond style moment, but I feel like it showed a complete lack of awareness on the writers' parts of everything that had made Eggsy a great character up until that moment.

The word you want is 'chav'. Eggsy's a chav. General all rounder phrase for people who don't talk posh or dress posh.

Yup, I 100% agree. I get that it was supposed to be a send-up of a common genre trope, but it just didn't fit—with the character's arc or the rest of the movie's vibe.

The word you want is 'chav'.

Thank you! I've heard the term before (mainly from watching Misfits :P), but I wouldn't have really known whether I was using it correctly in this context.

I thought that was crass and unfunny, too. It didn't ruin the whole thing for me, but I wish they hadn't thrown it in there.

BIG FUCKING (pun not intended) SPOILER

SPOILER

NO SERIOUSLY

He marries her in the sequel so idk how random she is. Doesn't negate your point about his character though.

NAYRT

She is a perpetual damsel in distress though. She is literally a sexy lamp in movie two. I like the fact they stayed together, that seemed sweet, but at the same time, she's not a major important character as she had no personality.

Re: BIG FUCKING (pun not intended) SPOILER

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT--yeah, she's not an amazing character in and of herself, but so far as it reflects Eggsy's character, he doesn't treat her as disposable/a Bond girl, but if you only watched the first film you wouldn't know that.

Re: BIG FUCKING (pun not intended) SPOILER

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
DA - She's still just some random princess to him (and, largely, to us) at the time when he fucks her, though. And I find his eagerness to bang a woman he doesn't know at all, when she has made it 100% clear that access to her orifices is a reward for saving the world, to be kind of pathetic. Like, congrats on being a run-of-the-mill horndog bro who fucks any hole he consensually can, I guess. I just expected better.

Not trying to come for you, here. We can totally disagree on this and it's fine.

nayrt but I agree.

I think it's okay to pretend something didn't happen if you didn't find it fitting someone's characterization. You can think of it as "He fucked a random princess because the writer thought it would be funny, but it was a misstep in his characterization so I choose to ignore it." In the end, characters aren't actually people with the ability to choose how they act.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
da

I don't think anyone was trying to claim she's a significant character, just that she wasn't a random pump-and-dump, which changes the implications for his characterization somewhat.

Re: Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Like, I know they were trying to make this exaggerated satire of James Bond. And their literal thought at the end was "how do we top James Bond" type of thing. "What is the one thing we can do. Oh, ass fucking!" To them it was like this "joke." They really did think it was funny from the commentary.

It really soured it for me. Then the whole second movie had sequel problems (I include Channing Tatum as sequel problems at least he was only in it for less than 10 minutes) and the only reason I'd be willing to watch the Prequel is b/c it doesn't have the same characters. Maybe the female character agent will do more this time? If not, yeah, I'm over it.

I don't totally understand the issue, is it just the idea of woman as prize

Re: Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I never even considered all of that (but I agree) -- i just couldn't stand the scene period. It made me eye roll to high heaven. Really? A princess? Really? His "prize" is anal? Really? It was just sleazy and a bit out of nowhere. Like, we were all having a good time and then someone goes too far and nobody stops him (whoever wrote this in. Felt totally shoehorned)

Re: Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Are you telling me that anal sex with a woman was used as a "prize" in a movie. Is that what you are saying.

Re: Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
NA - I dont think that's the sole objection. But yes that happened. :/

Re: Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Would it be less bad if it was vaginal sex instead of anal sex?

Re: Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
why are you trying to pick a fight over this

Re: Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

I'm confused! I don't understand it!

You don't? Are you stupid?

Random Anon

No. To me at least. It wouldn't have mattered whatever the sexual act. It's still annoying and cheapening to the entire story. His character development (haha see you can take the person out of X, but you can't take the X out of person/a reward for your hard work *eyeroll*). And her use as a character. Like who even is this? We see her for all of five minutes and all she's there for is to provide some motive and sex? Come on.

Re: Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes total sense to me!

Re: Not controversial enough to be a Fandom Secret, imo, so I'm dropping it here instead.

Seconding this.

I will say, if the fact that it was anal makes any difference to me at all, it is purely because the narrative treats it like it make a difference. The narrative clearly thinks anal is The Most a woman can offer a man. The narrative goes for anal specifically, and not vaginal, because that's the joke. "Haha! He's such a big hero she's willing to offer him The Ass!"

But if we set aside the female-objectifying, horndog narrative perspective that thinks sex is a thing women give up to men and that The Ass is the ultimate thing for a woman to "give up," and instead just look at the events of the scene objectively, then no, the fact that it's anal doesn't make a difference. What bothers me about the scene wouldn't change if it was vaginal instead.
