The original source material is pretty shippy as well, as are most of the other adaptions. Which is mainly the reason why I shipped them. I thought there was an okay amount of tension between them and the whole "find the one person you'll want to protect" made it very shippy but there was just so much going on in that movie...
Since I'm a diehard fan of the older (and accordingly more trashy due to age) original Japanese movie adaptions and adore the characters'/acters' chemistry in them I'm also not entirely sure how I like the way they changed some of the character traits in this adaption.

I just watched the trailer for this one, and I was wondering. I only saw the Onmyoji movies once a good while ago, but if Bo Ya is Hiromasa, he's much harder-edged in the new version.

Yeah he's... very, very different. Quite the polar opposite, except for a general sense of righteousness, I guess. It's a cool character in this movie, but a very different one from Hiromasa.

Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about that. Most of what I remember of Onmyoji was Hiromasa being adorable and good-hearted (and having the worst luck), and Seimei being very much 'I'm not sure how much I want in the way of human emotions, but this is my adorable idiot, and I will slaughter anyone who hurts him'. Also Seimei making the fox face. It's a memorable face.

Yeah, I'll be honest- one of the biggest issue for me was that Qing Ming's (the Seimei version of the CN movie) face wasn't nearly foxy enough. Especially since they actually kept the "his mother is rumoured to be a fox demon" part. But I'm biased because I simply adore Nomura Mansai and he was absolutely perfect in the role. I am a simple person like that.

I haven't read the source material. How were the character traits changed?

Seimei/Qing Ming hasn't changed that much, though I would say he's even more sly in the novels but the big change is Hiromasa/Bo Ya. Hiromasa, while generally righteous as well, is much more easygoing in the novels. He's often infatuated with a new lady and is basically the "straight man" representing a more worldly /straight laced POV compared to Seimei's mystical trickstery side. They have a bit of a Holmes/Watson dynamic in general.
In the Japanese movies, Hiromasa is also a bit of a comic relief on occasion.

I like the sound of that, I'll have to check out the books, thanks!
