I saw a comment earlier saying that a few years ago we would've all seriously lost our shit at this due to the fact it's essentially cut off a MAJOR shipping route. But because of the past 12 months it's a bit like "well, ok that makes sense" so now we're memeing with gallows humour. I mean, the shipping route thing is still a big deal but I think in the context of the last 1-2 years, it's just hitting differently. Anyway, the memes are fun.

On the face of it it's funny.

But I work in a vaguely related field and the pandemic has fucked global shipping up. Container prices have rocketed and it's started putting small businesses out of business on a global scale. This is going to fuck things up more and prices will rise further and more people are going to lose their livelihoods across the planet at the worst possible time.

So I can't enjoy and I just cannot find it funny.

I work in the industry and find it hilarious. Look, if they didn't lose their livelihood during Covid, this ain't gonna do it.

AYRT You're talking out of your ass. In some places container costs have risen 1,500% already. What's happening right now will further increase that. Believe it or not that has a significant effect, especially on firms that have weathered covid but are not in financially robust positions because their reserves have been destroyed by the pandemic. It's not rocket science that costs that cannot be recovered from the value of the goods being shipped is a death knell for companies. Don't be so goddamn heartless.

it's funny if you don't live anywhere in europe that relies on articles that ship through the canal from asia

so while the notion of a tiny digger trying to pull out a 400m ship that decided to try a three-point turn in a 280m wide channel is moderately amusing (okay, that's not what happened, but i'm not buying that a 30mph wind is going to blow a 200000 tonne ship off course - that's like me trying to blow a house over - more likely somebody fell asleep at the controls), watching the delays turn into expenses that will inevitably be passed on to consumers is somewhat less so (especially when our government already managed to logjam our biggest port during the pandemic through rank stupidity and/or carelessness (bulk ordering a massive amount of shitty ppe))

I think it's less that it blew it off course and more than in addition to the wind they lost visibility from sand/dirt.
