Oof, yeah, I can sympathize with your frustration over that. I can think of a few people in some of my fandoms who've acted that way, too.

Sometimes I worry that I'm too invested in fandom, and then I read secrets like this and think, "You know what? I'm okay, actually. I'm an appropriate amount of engaged here."

(Anonymous) 2021-03-31 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Hard same.

"Hope this wasn't made by someone I know, I'm aware I've been kind of fixated on... oh wait. ...Nope. No, definitely not. I am aware my character is kind of a dick."

Agree, I don’t think there’s an age limit on fandom obviously but definitely feel I have less time to dedicate to it now I’m older, but still worry it’s “too much” compared to others my age. Secrets like this make me realise...nah I’m completely fine.

MTE.

I absolutely still love my favorite characters and ships 100% in my 30's but I can step back and chill from it all too. I've got bills to pay man, I can't spend all my time fixating on the pretty people I like. xD

Lol Me too, nonny.

I've never understood people that do this tbh. If I like a character I like them for the flaws as well as their positive attributes, because that what makes them a well-rounded 'person' that I like, I genuinely cannot understand the fun of stripping one of my faves down to 'precious cinnamon roll uwu' and enjoying that. Some of my faves are dicks, and I like that about them.

Also I've seen it said online before but to paraphrase: if you keep calling every canon instance of a character doing things 'OOC' then perhaps you don't actually know or like that character as much as you think you do.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-31 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, I get the impulse to sanitize problematic faves, because I don't usually enjoy watching mine do awful shit to others or fuck up their own lives or both; I sometimes have to put a book down for awhile or watch through my fingers. I enjoy villain redemption when it's done well, but it seldom is. And some of the writing for my favorite characters has seemed OOC on occasion.

But I've seen other fans of my favorites say things that make me cringe because wow that's some quality denial you have there. Especially when they also claim to love redemption arcs, because if a character did nothing wrong and was just a misunderstood victim the whole time, why is it a big deal that they were redeemed? Redeemed from what? Redemption=/=exoneration.

AYRT.

YMMV but if my fave is genuinely a piece of shit then I do actually enjoy that aspect of them and don't water it down to make them more palatable. For me that's just not fun at all. But I see this kind of flattening for even the nice characters I like where they're squashed into shallow cardboard cut-outs with even less depth than their canon-selves(which in some cases is saying something as the canon isn't overly deep). But flaws are 'bad writing' to a majority of fandom I guess.

I've long since come to the realization that fandom doesn't want redemption arcs for their bad-guys faves, they want 'they did nothing wrong' arcs or 'the fave gets brutalized/hurt/tortured in place of actually learning any lessons in a cheap grab for sympathy' arcs. Because that's what I see 9/10, and I'd be down for some legit well-thought out redemption stories. But I have yet to see these.

Many of my favorite characters are complex and flawed, but I'm not someone who enjoys characters who are out-and-out Bad People. Or, if they are Bad People, then they have to have some very strong reasons for being that way. So if I love a character who is complex and flawed but then suddenly the writers have that character do something that is completely beyond the pale, my choice is either to stop liking them, ignore that bit of canon, or create a compelling headcanon for why they did this horrible thing. It's cool that some people like characters who are Bad People without any need to reconcile that with how they would feel about that character if they were a real-life person. But it doesn't work that way for me. My brain says nope.

Forgot to say, I'm a DA, not the AYRT.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-01 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT either, but I agree with your take. I like explaining a bad guy's actions without excusing them, but at the end of the day, a villain is a villain and I like them because, and not in spite of, their flaws. Funny that you say that about the redemption stories because, when the canon for my main fandom ends, I'm planning to write a long redemption arc for this dude. The audience for that sort of thing is small, but it's there!

This. Many of my favorite, including my top fave, are villains. I don't need to turn them into heroes or justify their actions. I love them because they are villains. Villains are fun and interesting, but they're still evil (most of the time). That's why I like them. Doing what these people do flattens them out and turns them uninteresting and boring.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-01 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
It just occurred to me, OP says they "identify" with the fave character... I wonder if that means they conflate their fave character with themselves and thus take every criticism of the character as criticism of themself? And when the character does something in canon that they themselves wouldn't do, then it's OOC?

I have had a few friends like that, mostly those who were really into RPing, yet would RP all their characters pretty much the same way, very similar to themselves. Retcon anything about the character they didn't relate to, next RP scene would walk back whatever was said or done they didn't like... :P

I mean it's just fandom, I let them enjoy it the way they enjoyed it - but if they're just going to project like that, it's not the kind of fandom stuff I enjoy, so I would go off and do my own thing.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-31 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This is all too real. I have many old friends I don't do fannish things with anymore because I can't stand the fangirling. I'm not here to hate on all fangirling, but there comes a point where you might move on a little. Have your enthusiastic interests, but obsession? Yikes. That's never too healthy at any age, believe me as someone who experienced it for myself. I don't want to be that person again. I was very unhappy.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-31 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You gotta do what you gotta do to preserve your sanity, OP. I’ve had to cut ties with people like that before and it sucked because I just wanted them to go back to the way they were before obsessing over a character, but I got to a point where they were making me miserable and couldn’t wait around for them to see the light.

You just described a lot of circa-2004 Harry Potter fandomers.

That sounds incredibly insufferable, wow. I don't understand how people just make up a completely invented version of their fave and then have the audacity to be mad that canon is different from their own imagination

(Anonymous) 2021-04-01 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Now I wonder if this person's... zealotry regarding this character is their way of getting all the crazy out and not pouring it out in their RL situation. Who knows if course, they could be this wild with their family too *shrug*.

But I'm sorry they're kinda ruining the fun/chill you're looking for. Are you cold ghosting or just fading them out slowly?

I'm always afraid I'm too crazy about my fandom faves/newest boo or have WAY too many feelings, but seeing this reminds me i don't have THAT many feelings. Good luck to both of you.
