Re: What are some specific examples of outfits or costumes in media that you really like?

Thranduil's characterization was all wrong in the Hobbit movies, but his look was amazing. Galadriel was all around amazing.

I liked the costumes of Bilbo in both LOTR and Hobbit and the similarities between the different costumes. That was nice.

Honestly just the costuming in those movies in general was amazing. And the attention to detail. And you'd have similarities with people who were related and/or came from the same place. It really just was superbly done.

Darth Vader would be an obvious choice. But beyond him, there are other great Star Wars costumes. I really liked what they did with Leia's clothes in the sequel trilogy. She looked like the respected, though aged, and still ready for anything general she was.

Dooku's costume just looks badass. He looks like a guy who used to be a jedi and also a count, who is used to being respected and obeyed and being in charge and who even though he's switched sides expects everything to still go his way. Perfect.

I liked Bail Organa's costumes because they looked like proper politician costumes. Same goes for Palpatine really.

Thor's costume is great. I prefer his earlier costume to his Ragnarok one, but that's mostly due to the haircut. The actual costume is still pretty awesome.

Darken Rahl and Kahlen's costumes on Legend of the Seeker. Darken only has one main one, but it is sexy as hell and also perfect because it makes him look both regal and yet believably villainous at the same time. And then there are Kahlen's costumes, which are all amazing and sexy and perfect.

you know, I actually never was sold on the elven costumes but now the LOTR movies are like, The Template for designing and costuming elves so ugh. But totally sold on the hobbits, such excellent design.

for all the hate the SW prequels get, the costume design was amazing and I will stan it to my grave. I've made several and ferreting out the little details, down to the shoulder tuck on Ewan's Jedi robes to help him look slightly larger, is always a delight. Yeah, a lot of Padme's gowns were straight up taken from Mongolian and Tibetan noble wear but if it brings attention to those cultures, so much the better. I had the pleasure of hearing Iain McCaig speak at a convention once, about his costume designs and the process of getting them approved, it was such an eye-opener.

I love the prequel costuming in general too. So beautiful, and it really worked to make it seem like a world that was a whole galaxy of different species, cultures, and people.

There was a bit where it felt like the LotR elven costumes were influencing the Vulcan costumes on Enterprise. Now they seem to have swung from "Vulcans are space elves in a dignified Elrond kind of way" to "Romulans are space elves in a badass Legolas kind of way."
