I haven't played Mass Effect yet so I'm not familiar with the characters. I heard the non-straight options were disappointing overall? Were there too few or just not done well? I don't mind player-sexual NPCs, but it drives me crazy when the game tries to push one character over the others. Its the surest way to make me not pick them.

For wlw options you only had Liara, and if you didn't like the character: welp.

The mlm were similarly lackluster. They didn't exist in ME1+2, and for 3 it was a barely-there side-character or you could romance Kaiden if you did an incredibly convoluted set of steps to 'unlock' his romance.

I'm not sure I can judge on how bad or good they were done, for the time they were probably okay, but I personally couldn't stand how Liara would invade your personal boundaries and it was seen as romantic because she was the 'canon' love interest. As for the mlm options I've never played them so I couldn't say.

A lot of it will be personal preference I'd say.

That sucks. I thought there were more.

Liara sounds frustrating. I don't get the need for a canon love interest in games where the whole point is player choice. It happens all too often.

It's worse than that, Bioware killed pan Jack for ME2 after controversy over same-gender romance options hit Fox Mews.

That is bad. There should be more effort to include same-gender romances these days. It seems only a few series are actually making the attempt. More than there used to be, but still too few.

To be fair, it was 10 years ago, before Bioware had fully committed to romances for everyone. Even then, I think Old Republic didn't have same-gender romance options initially due to Lucasfilm pressure.

There's also Samantha Traynor in ME3 for fem!Shep.

And unlocking Kaidan's romance isn't remotely convoluted. You have to 1) talk to him, 2) not be a fucking asshole, and 3) express interest, same as any other new romance in the game.
