IMO San Juniper isn't as good as people were hyping it to be.

I know San Junipero is meant to be the "positive" episode and that's part of why everyone loves it but idk. When I thought about it too much I still found many of the implications extremely bleak. I didn't get the feel-good vibes about the conclusion personally.

Could you tell me about the bleak implications? I have a friend who recced this episode because I'm not a big fan of darker stuff by saying it's one of the lighter episodes.

It's definitely a YMMV thing, and when I first watched it my initial reaction was along the lines of "well, that was cute!" But essentially living in the virtual world, by one way or another, isn't a possibility for everyone so the main characters actually lose people in their real lives forever. Getting to spend eternity not subjected to age or disease essentially getting a second chance at life is nice as a thought, but I just didn't like the implication that if your (e.g.) spouse doesn't agree to it or dies before the technology is available, that means it's no better than actual reality where when someone you love dies, you never see them again.

There's also some themes along the euthanasia lines. I'm not anti-enthanasia btw, it's just a pretty heavy theme for an apparently light episode.

You'll probably be fine watching the episode as it's definitely not the usual Black Mirror affair where you get clubbed constantly with the harshness and horribleness. The technology isn't the force for evil or bad guy in this episode, it's just a plot point. But thinking about it more definitely removed some of the fluff for me.

I had a similar issue with Nosedive, which is another "lighter" episode in that it's quite comical. But I found the social media ratings and how badly the main character falls from grace quite hard to watch. The cringe hit too close to reality I think.

Thanks for the write-up. I guess I'll have to pass on this show.

Agree on Nosedive, but not San Junipero, since in real life people die and you never see them again anyway, I didn't have a problem with that. I liked that a person who was ill/disabled didn't have to be in their afterlife, as somebody with a disability.

I never really got the hype around the San Junipero episode. I think a comment ITT about the implications was good, and it just. It unimpressed me? There were other BM episodes I think were better or were stronger. But that's all taste I guess. I think I personally also just didn't really dig the whole post life VR thing/I didn't really buy the sudden romance? But I'm not a fan of sudden Romeo/Juliet we just met romances period. Unless I'm misremembering? Oh well. I certainly don't recall the episode you're stating is better, but I stopped watching BM after a while.

Is that Hang the DJ? That episode was boring and the only reason I watched it all the way through was because I read on TV Tropes that the female character was bisexual and got a happy ending. After I finished the episode I was utterly confused about where in the episode she was shown to be bisexual, and after some Googling found out it was because in the montage of them trying hundreds of different blink-and-you-miss-em, silhouetted only partners, one of them in her room was another woman('s silhouette). Deep sigh.
