So there's going to be at least one character who's designated the fragile badass, one who's Joss's self-insert, everyone will talk like they grew up in California in the 90s, and the historical aspects will be well-researched using only the finest pulp romance novels? I've read that fanfic. It was alright.

I mean, if you're just talking about his dialogue style, I might agree. It might be unpopular these days, but I liked Buffyspeak and I liked his Avengers-style banter. (I even still like Sorkin's dialogue.)

But I really don't need more "kickass/traumatized women", at least not in the kinds of stories that Whedon tends to tell.

And I'm not sure I can bear to watch James Norton overact a role as a

But its hard not to feel deeply weirded out about Whedon's authorial attitude towards them in a way that makes it feel creepy to enjoy any part of it

So I guess the ideal is the show lasts long enough for the non-Whedon writers to come in and keep the premise but get rid of the bad vibes

My problem with the show was the shitty modern music, which I found so jarring I lasted one episode.

But the characters and plot...seemed okay. The music was just so, so bad and mood-destroying for me.

If you’re a fan of Whedon’s work, then I hope you enjoy the show, OP.

But I don’t think the reviewers meant “Whedonesque” as any kind of reference to the recent hits to his reputation. More than likely, it’s meant to tell readers that the show uses the same formula that most of Whedon’s work does. Over and over and over again. The same character tropes, the same dialogue beats, the same plot “twists”, etc.

And no judgement to those viewers who enjoy Whedon’s formula, but I don’t, not anymore.

There are things about Whedon's style I love, and things I've come to find tiresome.

He's really, really good at creating ensemble dynamics where everyone has a clear, distinct personality, and the dynamics between characters feel immediately recognizable and sturdy. He's also fantastic at giving all of his characters ways of contributing to the plot, so that nobody feels completely extraneous. One thing I will always love about Whedon's writing is that he understands that there's always enough awesome to go around if you want there to be. He doesn't give all the cool shit to one character; he makes sure to find cool shit for all the characters, and I think that's fantastic.

That said, I also find his style kind of...idk, juvenile? At least by 2021 standards of story-telling. Like, fifteen years ago, I would watch his stuff, and I'd admire the fact that it had unexpected depths behind it's fluffy facade. It had heart, and that was wonderful. But I guess my expectations and standards have changed, because these days, it's hard not to notice that it may be deeper than fluff, but it's ultimately a bit simplistic. Like, I don't watch Buffy now and find new depths and complexities to it that didn't resonate with me when I was fifteen.

That said, there's nothing remotely wrong with still loving his stuff now, as much as ever. It's entirely a matter of personal taste, imo.

Is there a different picture of this character where she looks like she has a muzzle? You know, protruding jaw, maybe an overbite? All I'm getting from this one is sort of a "Bratz Doll's lesbian mom" vibe.

I started watching GA during lockdown and you know what? I freaking love it. Who cares if it's basically a soap? Who doesn't love hot people drama.

I like that Meredith is a mess at times, I like the characters and their relationships. I even liked Izzy!

I like that the LGBT+ rep isn't tokenistic and they have as messy, chaotic relationships as all the straight couples.

I was annoyed when Hahn vanished because I liked her and the different energy she brought. I would have liked to see how she and Cristina eventually worked together because they would have been awesome together but Teddy is cool.
