I'm sorry you have bad taste, anon.

But his stuff has not held up over the years if you look at it with ANY critical eye. Even his best work. I mean, you like what you like, so uh...have fun, but I get why this is a secret cause it shows you like trash

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry about your extra, super big feelings but Buffy is still a known franchise for a good reason.

Too bad about those big feelings though :)

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This turned unnecessarily personal quickly. You couldn't have made the same point without the digs at OP?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Not and remained convinced that their taste=objective fact. Which is clearly important for some reason connected possibly to them being an ass.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like Whedon OR his stuff, but this seems unnecessarily mean.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
What an ass.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
They're an ass but they're not really wrong, with the exception of like... 4 seasons of Buffy that are good

If your head was any further up your ass you'd be a Klein bottle.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I love that, I've got to write that one down - what a delightful turn of phrase!

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
+10000000 Thank you for this.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I didn't know a universal arbiter of good taste had been elected! That must make you feel really big and important, anon!

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Starting with an ad hominem attack is not a way to start a meaningful dialogue.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I just assume that as soon as the other person drops an insult, they've lost the argument. Whether or not they have good points.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
So there's going to be at least one character who's designated the fragile badass, one who's Joss's self-insert, everyone will talk like they grew up in California in the 90s, and the historical aspects will be well-researched using only the finest pulp romance novels? I've read that fanfic. It was alright.

This is what I don't like about Whedon's work. I can understand why others like it and there are elements and tropes I enjoy, but not how he does it.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, if you're just talking about his dialogue style, I might agree. It might be unpopular these days, but I liked Buffyspeak and I liked his Avengers-style banter. (I even still like Sorkin's dialogue.)

But I really don't need more "kickass/traumatized women", at least not in the kinds of stories that Whedon tends to tell.

And I'm not sure I can bear to watch James Norton overact a role as a

*And I'm not sure I can bear to watch James Norton overact a role as a "a pansexual posh boy whose charm has about five years left on its lease".

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Sorkin's style of dialogue not popular anymore? :(

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
People think he's maybe a bit repetitive.

Unrelated to anon’s comment, but I hate it that people apparently credit Whedon with creating this type of dialogue, i.e.: Buffyspeak. I mean, teenagers talked like that for YEARS before Buffy was on the air. I’d concede that Whedon may have popularized it, but he sure as hell didn’t invent it.

Sorry for the hijack, anon, personal pet peeve. But I 1000% agree with being over the kickass/traumatized woman trope that Whedon inserts in everything he writes.

I like pretty kickass women in pretty dresses

But its hard not to feel deeply weirded out about Whedon's authorial attitude towards them in a way that makes it feel creepy to enjoy any part of it

So I guess the ideal is the show lasts long enough for the non-Whedon writers to come in and keep the premise but get rid of the bad vibes

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
My problem with the show was the shitty modern music, which I found so jarring I lasted one episode.

But the characters and plot...seemed okay. The music was just so, so bad and mood-destroying for me.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
If you’re a fan of Whedon’s work, then I hope you enjoy the show, OP.

But I don’t think the reviewers meant “Whedonesque” as any kind of reference to the recent hits to his reputation. More than likely, it’s meant to tell readers that the show uses the same formula that most of Whedon’s work does. Over and over and over again. The same character tropes, the same dialogue beats, the same plot “twists”, etc.

And no judgement to those viewers who enjoy Whedon’s formula, but I don’t, not anymore.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
There are things about Whedon's style I love, and things I've come to find tiresome.

He's really, really good at creating ensemble dynamics where everyone has a clear, distinct personality, and the dynamics between characters feel immediately recognizable and sturdy. He's also fantastic at giving all of his characters ways of contributing to the plot, so that nobody feels completely extraneous. One thing I will always love about Whedon's writing is that he understands that there's always enough awesome to go around if you want there to be. He doesn't give all the cool shit to one character; he makes sure to find cool shit for all the characters, and I think that's fantastic.

That said, I also find his style kind of...idk, juvenile? At least by 2021 standards of story-telling. Like, fifteen years ago, I would watch his stuff, and I'd admire the fact that it had unexpected depths behind it's fluffy facade. It had heart, and that was wonderful. But I guess my expectations and standards have changed, because these days, it's hard not to notice that it may be deeper than fluff, but it's ultimately a bit simplistic. Like, I don't watch Buffy now and find new depths and complexities to it that didn't resonate with me when I was fifteen.

That said, there's nothing remotely wrong with still loving his stuff now, as much as ever. It's entirely a matter of personal taste, imo.
