How has everyone been? Good, I hope. My uncle passed away unexpectedly, so I've been dealing with all of that.

I've missed you mostly-not-logged-in people.

Being anon vs known

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
After being anon here for a while, I'm considering making an actual account. Any thoughts? Why do you post anon or signed in?

Re: Being anon vs known

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If I'm known, I get in my head more about "how will this post be perceived" and stuff like that. My brain gremlins are more active and annoying.

I post both. Depending on what I am posting.

Re: Being anon vs known

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly the only reason I don't post logged in is because 99 percent of the time I'm logged into one of my RP accounts, and it's just easier to click anon than to log out and back into my actual journal.

sometimes I do, though. I'd like to train myself to do it more often so that if people want to talk more about a shared fandom or something about cooking or idefk whatever, they can.

Re: Being anon vs known

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually been thinking about not posting anon anymore. Basically I started because I had been getting some hate in a particular fandom for basically being prolific and well-known, and so I... basically didn't know how to handle that other than to disappear. Left that fandom, started posting only anonymous in shared fandom spaces like this.

But it's been something like ten years now, I'm certainly not "hogging the spotlight" in anything but a dead fandom (and that's because hardly anyone else is ever writing in it). And it would be a lot easier to find replies to my comments and whatnot if I posted here logged in (which I always am, and I have to remember to click "more options" to post anonymously, and one extra step isn't that much but it's getting old).

But also I've been posting here anonymously so long that if I start posting under my actual account I kinda feel like I'd need to go "oh by the way I was '[subject]-anon' and '[othersubject]-anon' if anyone needs to get in touch with me about those things" but that would seem like drawing unnecessary attention to myself and aaauuugggh that's why I went anon in the first place.

So I keep thinking "okay you know what, tomorrow I'll just start posting un-anon again and not say anything and if people want to connect the dots they can" but then the next day's post goes up and I chicken out.

I stay anon because:
1. I'm not very active in fandom
2. I'd be lazy about logging in etc.
3. I'd likely end up with two accounts -- one for posting here since it's more of a public forum and one for posting in my specific fandom communities/groups. (which circles back to 2 in terms of upkeep of either account)

I mostly post logged-in because I always did back in the LJ days. Back then there were a lot more users but it felt a bit like everyone knew the fandoms most users were more active in, so posting anon was often pointless if everyone knew that was your thing and you said something you'd expressed previously. At the same time, I know there were always people who preferred their identity not being known at all so my view of being logged-in isn't universal.

But sometimes I go anon on here if I'm going to say something that I worry will cause a pile-on because I don't get the notifications and often forget I said anything, so I don't see any beef happening!

I was anon on here for years. there are certain things I've said here as an anon that some people got very pissed at me for saying that I wouldn't say as known.

Re: Being anon vs known

(Anonymous) 2021-04-11 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Always anon. I just love having a space where I can say whatever I want that won't get traced back to my identity in any sort of way. For the record I don't usually say anything too spicy, but it's nice not having to worry at all about how I come across. Because of the anonymity, Fandomsecrets feels like the last safe space on the internet.

Re: Being anon vs known

I am always anon and on places that require an account I keep it as anon as possible. It's just how I've always done it.
This is also why I don't have fandom friends so choose what is more important to you.

I've literally never had a social media account anywhere unless my signing up for Ao3 last year to read locked fics counts. I still use my email address from the mid-90s. I have social anxiety out the wazoo, so it's nice to be able to post anon and not worry about it. I lurked even here until FS migrated to Dreamwidth and I think for a couple years after, I don't remember when I first actually commented.

I've pissed off a couple of people (or maybe not, maybe just one anon because how would I know?) here a few times, but I've never caused serious drama of the hundred-plus comment thread variety, more like maybe 10 comments tops, and that's rare. I've never tried to troll people, though, and I think some of the endless wank threads have trolls egging each other on.

Does anyone else follow the hobbydrama subreddit? We were mentioned in last week's scuffles post. Apparently my online circld is smaller than I thought.

Brb, gotta go read what happened.

Come to think of it hobbydrama hasn't been appearing on my reddit dash.... looks like I have some catching up to do.
But where is fandom secrets mentioned? I can't find it. And last week's scuffles has 700 replies.

Wattpad & Other FF Sites

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't really read any wattpad stories (as apparently you need to have an account most times to access certain material? Idk. I also get the feeling the demographic tends to skew younger, but whatever) but damn do they have good covers for their fics lol. Half of them look like movie posters or album covers! Lmao

I remember when someone making a banner for a fic was a big deal (to me at least, esp. if it was a reader for a story I wrote), now you've gotta have promo images too?

Please share your experience of wattpad (and/in comparison to any of your preferred FF sites)!
