Re: What was cool when you were young but isn’t cool now?

I'm a pro at liking things that were once cool for the following 20 years so

- Glow in the dark things are cute
- Liquid bags, pouches etc (SO GLAD they're back in vogue!)
- Bell-bottoms (actually I have a good reason for this one, I have big calves so)
- please bring back pixel games (they still cool in some circles but I wish they were in ALL)
- back pinned bangs. I saw someone trashtalk it these days and was ravaged
- pop-punk/pop-emo music please make a comeback? I was expecting it but damn this pandemic...
- CUTE MOBILE PHONES... decoden, cellphone straps, pink bunny ear covers with fluffy pompom tails, downloadable "custom theme" apps like Cocoppa and the such. As a teen I had a few cellphone straps I treasured a lot and would put a few stickers in my phone. While I never... had the courage to do any of it as an adult I enjoyed browsing pictures still. (My theme was really cute, though, because nobody got to see it behind a password.)
- can I say Tumblr? I wasn't young when Tumblr became a thing but it hasn't been a thing for nearly 10 years now and sometimes I miss it. I know it was trashy in many ways but for self-expression I never found anything quite like it, and honestly I liked the transition from LJ to Tumblr unlike many so. Cute mobiles were very much a trend popularized by Tumblr and so was pastel decora/fairy kei and the such, and I still love it, sigh...
- speaking of Tumblr I want to say "good shoujo/josei" because honestly... :/
- PC MMOs like Ragnarok Online or Maple Story! Nowadays people seem to play online on their videogame consoles most often, but I'm not willing to pay PSPlus to play once a month, so... I haven't liked any PC MMO trend since LoL lmao
- I don't miss LJ at all but I have to say I miss those days when personal .com/etc domains for fandom stuff were still cool and people would make custom fandom-inspired layouts and fanlisting shrines and could talk about it for ages. It was probably... a lot of work not really worth it but to this day sometimes I browse fanlistings.org just to see remnants of this past. I'm glad it's making a comeback albeit silent and small and I kind of want to have one too.

(Or, in other words, take me back to 200x.)

I miss cell phone straps. My friends and I all had cute matching ones and I liked buying one whenever we traveled somewhere else. I was kinda bummed out when I got my first smartphone because you can't put one on those, so now all my cell phone straps live in the box where I keep all the junk from my high school years. At least my phone cases are still cute (currently have a Cardcaptor Sakura one on my phone).

I miss good shoujo stuff too. I don't know if it's just me getting older or what, but the last shoujo manga I read that made my heart go all dokidoki was Kamisama Kiss. Oh, and My Love Story. I don't think I've ever read any josei (I thought Nana was josei, but apparently it's shoujo). Got any recs?

I feel you. That's cool! Even in the "age of smartphones" I had my straps in my phone case for a while. Some of my friends have cute cases and I appreciate that but people in my job might not take it well and I'm lazy to switch it daily.

I thought so, too, but recently I've been re/reading shoujo manga and I realized I still like the aesthetic, (I'm particularly crazy about modern, as in post-2015 shoujo, it's all so cute!) and those with good stories still hold up. My main issue is, well, they seldom have good stories now IMO. For josei, I just use that as an umbrella term because there's shoujo that could very well be josei (like NANA), josei that could very well be shoujo (like Hatenkou Yuugi or Spicy Pink) or even shounen (say, Usagi Drop?). Having said that, some of my personal favorites (and I had to double-check to make sure, I'll give you that!) are Chihayafuru, Kuragehime, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and Honey & Clover.

Oh, I never knew Kuragehime was josei! I always thought it was shojo. Lol I like that one too. I've heard good things about Chihayafuru, so I'll give that one a go next. Thanks for the recs!

I wasn't sure either, so I had to double-check. Either way, I use "josei" as a broad term for anime/manga geared towards young-adult-and-older ladies even if not necessarily published in a josei magazine - I really like this kind of content, but it feels scarcer by the day. :/ From the list, I'd have to say my favorite is Honey & Clover closely followed by Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, but Chihayafuru isn't bad either, and Hatenkou Yuugi is my favorite manga even if the anime... sucks badly. Hope you enjoy these if you get around to reading/watching!
