You... you have a point there, OP.

I dunno, there is content in that book that makes me so intensely uncomfortable. But damn, those uncomfortable bits carry so much narrative weight? The redemption arc hits harder, the Final Villain's actions are more complicated, it's just... it is what it is.

(Also also, if it came out now it would probs be competing with Word of Honor fans.)

I was curious about this because of Luo Yun Xi (one of the few people I enjoyed in Ashes of Love) but haven't read the books and don't plan to. Guess we'll see what happens?

So, what did you think of that high school roleplay scene towards the beginning of A History of Violence?

(Apologies for everything else that happens in A History of Violence.)

Yes! I miss it too. Example being all of Niles' one-liners and sass towards Miss Babcock in "The Nanny", though I have to endure the constant sexism that Fran gets by Mr. Sheffield and people hating her a lot (minus the children who adore Fran a lot and Niles, of course). It's pretty uncomfortable watching that today. For such a titular protagonist, you really do feel bad for her a lot, even through her wacky Lucy Ricardo-like antics.

Yessss. Classics reruns on Nick @ Nite were my jam as a teen. Lucy, Jeannie, Bewitched, The Munsters... clever dialogue, situational comedy and censor-dodging innuendo were the best. The Dick Van Dyke show was my favorite for having really smart sarcastic characters that still did silly shit. Chic-ass Laura Petrie sailing out of a closet on a river of walnuts is all I ever wanted to be in this life.

Awwww yes. I got hooked on those things through Nick at Nite too, and I mean... are you ever going to be able to pitch a show like Mr. Ed or Gilligan's Island again? They just kinda did whatever they felt like doing, and if the writing was decent, so was the show. In the 80s we got a little of that kind of stuff still, with Alf and Small Wonder and (my absolute favorite sitcom as a kid) Out of This World. Then it seems like sitcoms mostly just went with "here are some people, and they are saying funny things and getting into embarrassing situations."

I recently went without cable though, and found this one antenna-only station that aired old reruns and... there's a reason I hadn't heard of some of them. Like I'm sure "Bachelor Father" was a really exciting unique situation someone dreamed up at the time, but nowadays it's like "Really? That's the hook, a father raising a daughter?" And I really could have done without the racist Asian caricatures. -_- I suppose that the ones we think of as classics are the best of the bunch, and there was drek back then just as there is now.

I'll add to the list of those who agree. I just like shows that aren't afraid to be ridiculous and/or sentimental in their comedy. I just feel like so much of it is so self-conscious and ironic and hipster-ish nowadays, and there's definitely a place for that kind of humor, too, of course, but...yeah. I dunno. I watch old sitcoms from the '90s and earlier and I wish we had more comedies like that on the air again.

I recently did a rewatch of 3rd Rock From the Sun, and one of the reasons it really does hold up very well is that they were very serious about never making the story go non-comedic. Kind of like a Seinfeldian lack of drama but with hugging and occasional lessons.

Also Dick Solomon is one of the greatest characters ever, and the whole cast is actually old-school superb as in great at slapstick, incredible timing, excellent chemistry, etc.

Yeah. Back then I could still handle TV. Nowadays... why do I even pay Netflix?

I adore I Love Lucy and still watch it, but I can't think of another show from that time period (or any between the '50s-'70s) that I still enjoy.

I've been staying with my grandparents for a few months and they only get satellite with all the old sitcoms, and it's so. Refreshing? There's more slapstick and witty humor. Not to sound like a sourpuss or a prude but so many modern sitcoms are like flat out insults and sex jokes and everything is dipped in a thousand layers of sarcasm. It's just kind of exhausting to watch

I know exactly what you mean because I'm going through a similar thing right now with Tiger & Bunny. It started airing just about the same time my health problems ticked up, and as I got further into the series, my health was getting worse and worse, and I couldn't even watch more than 30 seconds at a time of the last two episodes because by that time I was having days-long panic attacks more often than I wasn't, and anything remotely emotional made it worse. I want to rewatch the whole thing now that season 2 is imminent and the panic attacks at least are all but gone, but as the episodes creep by, it's like my body remembers what it was doing the first time I watched them. -_-

It suuuuucks because I loved the series, much like you seem to love FB, but emotional association is a heck of a thing. :/ I wish I had some advice to offer, but haven't figured it out myself.

Yeah, same. I generally hate younger guy/older guy stuff (in this order), but then I got into this pairing and...yeah. It helps their personalities don't fit the usual stereotypes (I genuinely loathe the older guy stereotype who automatically acts like an innocent 15-year old girl as soon as someone gets him into bed), but otherwise I'm surprised at myself for really getting into it. It's also probably because if you reversed their positions you'd get a really shitty stereotypical pairing so at least this way there's some really good balance lol
