Yeah, same. I generally hate younger guy/older guy stuff (in this order), but then I got into this pairing and...yeah. It helps their personalities don't fit the usual stereotypes (I genuinely loathe the older guy stereotype who automatically acts like an innocent 15-year old girl as soon as someone gets him into bed), but otherwise I'm surprised at myself for really getting into it. It's also probably because if you reversed their positions you'd get a really shitty stereotypical pairing so at least this way there's some really good balance lol

People who defend the trope always say "But SOME characters really are like that!" And they are! And that's great! Ship those characters, not some weird seme/uke version of canon.

Well yeah, it's not the tropes that are the problem is a fandom warping the characters to fit tropes, and this happens pretty much all the time which is why it's so annoying. I'm here for adults being written like adults, not turning into wilting 14 year olds once the sex starts happening. It's maddening.

I think at some point, we're not really complaining about anything more specific than just bad writing

And I'm not saying those complaints aren't justified because bad writing is annoying but bad writers are still gonna be bad writers whatever tropes they use

DA - Thank you for saying this, because yeah, absolutely, this is how I see it as well.

At some point, yes, but "bad writing" in itself isn't contagious, and tropes are.

Eh, I think there's more to it than that. I'm never going to enjoy barbecue sauce on my pizza, but it's a very different experience to eat a bunch of bad pizzas that I dislike for different reasons (one's too greasy, one's a little burnt, one uses barbecue sauce, etc.) vs. eating a bunch of bad pizzas that all use barbecue sauce. I'd much rather have some variety in the type of badness I'm consuming!

Agreed. What I don't like is when people twist the personalities of characters to fit into those tropes - I have zero issues with the tropes themselves when they do in fact apply to the characters' canon selves. Like, right now I really like a pairing where the character who is usually written as the top is rough and stereotypically masculine and physically bigger and the character who is usually on the bottom is more delicate and feminine and submissive, but that's the way they actually are in canon, pairing aside.

Yup yup yup. Just like everyone else is saying, if the characters are really like that, I'd rather have them written that way than have someone change their personality just to subvert the tropes.

But the tropes are just not for me. I especially hate the height rule because (as noted in a comment the other day) I am tiny and toppy. I lean into pairings with characters who are likewise tiny and toppy. I wouldn't make the smaller character toppy if they didn't already have that sort of mannerism though, that's just as dumb as the reverse.

I agree, it's fine either way if it's actually plausible for the character to act like that, personally. And sometimes you can have more than 1 interpretation and - I tend to prefer it when characters subvert their stereotypes (ie the scrawny cute/"feminine" guy tops the bigger muscley partner) but in some cases the more predictable scenario works well or better, even for me... could be cute.
Can't say I blame anyone for liking seme/uke tropes either, even if I prefer it when characters are treated more like equals and I hate power imbalances or abusive relationships. It's just a matter of personal taste.
I AM willing to admit, though, that back when these stereotypes were TOO prevalent I felt really annoyed at people who wrote them like it, and maybe I still would if I were in fandoms where rigid seme/uke tropes are too prevalent.
