(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)The early plot arc episodes aren't good primarily because they introduce lots of mysteries. They're good because they're fucking good episodes of television. They're taut, well-made, intriguing, full of mysterious vibes, exciting, thrilling. The fact that they also have a broader context that they're supposed to fit into is only one part of that.
If you look at Piper Maru / Apocrypha for example - the idea that we're eventually going to find out what the deal is with the black oil is only one of the attractive and entertaining things about the episode, and focusing on that to the exclusion of the character drama, thrills, shock, etc is a big error in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-19 02:13 am (UTC)(link)OTOH, the questions the early Mytharc episodes made one ask were a big part of what made them taut, intriguing television. And once you know that most of the questions don't have coherent answers, a lot of what's great about those episodes begins to feel a bit hollow, IMO.
