And sometimes it's only one fic, but it's EPIC and then the rest of what's available is not good or, like, slice-of-life drabbles that do little to satisfy your craving for substantive fic and that's so annoying. Now you're shipping something that you know has the potential to have amazing fic and no one is writing it.

Thankfully, even though my main fandom is smallish and the number of fics for my two OTPs even smaller, the quality of the writing in my fandom is above average. There are a lot of great fics to choose from, although I've read them all and am now stuck just rereading my favorites.

But I remember when I was super into Doctor/Donna shipping, and it was always frustrating because the quality of the fics wasn't good, and 95% of them involved River and Rose bashing, so there was only very occasionally an actually decent fic.

I don't resent the well-written fics for being rare, I resent them for being almost perfect, except for a few minor issues that throw me off the whole thing.

My current ship is a medium-sized one, but 1. the quality of the fanfic for it is, on average, poor, and 2. I'm so deeply out of step with what the majority of fandom is into that only maybe 5% of the fics are remotely of interest to me in the first place.

So yeah, I definitely feel this secret. I mean, I don't personally resent the handful of authors who write good stuff for my OTP, I'm actually super grateful to them. But I can understand why someone would feel resentful.

I can even relate to the "most of the good fics are WIPs" part. It's not quite that dire for my OTP, but of the decently-written fics over 20K long, yeah most of them are abandoned WIPs.

Lmao i felt this way too hard.

The "how am I supposed to go back to the trash pile now?!" Really resonated. It's one of those things -- was it worth reading such good fic knowing all that's left now is flaming piles of garbage you'll have to sift through or adjust your tastes for? I don't know, OP. I just wish there was more quality (completed) works.

(That said, at least everyone else is trying/having a good time, but I too want a good time lol)

I don't ship rarepairs often but when I do it's obsessive and now I'm still at the "skimming through trash" phase with my current rarepair so... Wish me luck!

Honestly anon, I see your viewpoint. The Brett show is fantastic but in this world where everything constantly gets re-adapted, I think we're probably overdue a similar show for Holmes. Instead it just feels like only Hound of the Baskervilles and The Final Problem get a token isolated Victorian adaption every handful of years and it's pretty annoying because we all know how those ones go by now!
