No reason why Mary Morstan couldn’t be Watson's willing beard in a gay adaptation. Hell, make her gay too, do it's a mutually beneficial facade!

AYRT - Yeah, I'd be very much in favor of this - especially if Mary was gay too. Or she could be "just not interested in such things" (aka ace/aro). God, imagine the irony if Watson believes Holmes to be "just not interested in such things" when Holmes is in fact very interested in such things with Watson specifically, meanwhile Watson marries a woman who is actually "just not interested in such things." And in the end it works out swimmingly for everyone! But gay or bi-but-mostly-prefers-women Mary would also be 100% cool.
