Thanks, OP. I'm glad you understand.

I mean you're not wrong but this is kind of.... the general vibe with X-Files on the whole unfortunately

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, as a long time X-Files fan, you get used to it. That's why I preferred the Monster of the Week episodes.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OP of the secret comment. I am definitely feeling this. Many of the strongest Monster of the Week episodes will probably be among my favourites when I'm finished. I'm kinda over the story-arc for the series mythology by this point.

We just got to season 9 and I'll be honest, my enthusiasm to keep going is suffering. Not just the obvious that Mulder being gone has totally altered the dynamic, but it's very much feeling like watching a dying show. T-1000 gets some pretty nice character moments but then annoys me by managing to extremely out-Scully Scully by seeing all this shit and still being like "nah, I don't believe, sorry." He literally died and got brought back to life and is still doing it. URGH.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Kudos for sticking with it that long! I watched it as it aired and was getting less enthusiastic after season 6. Meanwhile, I still like and rewatch the MOTW episodes, even the cheezy ones.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it all as it aired and definitely prefer the Monster of the Week ones, and some two-parters, stuff like Anasazi. And TOOMS.

T-1000 sucks lol. (He's fine in other stuff, just not this!)

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP obviously but the funny thing is that the early season plot arc episodes are fantastic. Just taken as episodes of television, season 1-3 plot arc episodes are some of the strongest work the show ever did (with some exceptions, although I personally have a soft spot for Albert Hosteen).

It's just that it never went anywhere, and then from around season 5 onwards, the plot arc episodes are just totally awful. But taken on their own terms, EBE or Piper Maru / Apocrypha are phenomenal TV.

Maybe I should make this it's own secret.

OP of the secret and for what it's worth anon, I agree about the assessment of the first three seasons as some of those plot arc episodes were still pretty good.

I'm not sure if I'm 100% right here but I get the feeling it's when production was moved/the first movie happened that the wheels started to fall off. We wanted to do this properly so did watch the movie when we got to that point. I liked it but it just seemed to create more questions and the answers weren't always great.

Slightly off-topic, but I found this on TV Tropes: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheChrisCarterEffect

“Carter's attempted Amazon series The After was ultimately called off because of this trope. Amazon wanted a "show bible" before the first season was made, Carter preferred to make it up as he went along. It was an especially tough sell since Carter wanted the show to last for 99 episodes at a whopping $40 million per 9 episode season.”

The premise of the article - as stated - is clearly ridiculous, since there are widely popular genres (Eg, soap operas) in which it is widely known and accepted that the plot will go on forever without coming to a satisfactory resolution

GOOD CALL.

This is why Chris Carter should never be given sole control over another show again. I'm fine with him co-running a show, he's got some good ideas, but he needs to be smacked on the hand and told "No! Stop! You can have three more mysteries when you've finished the first five."

Original comment author here: thank you secret maker. I really like how you laid this out!

(Anonymous) 2021-04-19 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
The aesthetic of the secret really fits with the 90's aesthetic of the show, too. I dig it!

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched that show religiously during its original airing, but by the time the Samantha reveal finally came, I'd been kicked in the teeth by Chris Carter so many times that I couldn't even muster the energy to be angry. It might be worse for someone who binge-watched later because those viewers don't have time to reach the ground-down apathy of a real-time viewer.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, this

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched the X-Files as it aired, I would almost swear I actually watched this reveal. I have no memory of it at all. Spoil me (re-spoil?), I don't even know how to phrase "what the fuck happened" to google it and choose a good source for an answer.

(you're not wrong, there was so much teeth-kicking that I know for sure I noped out either when the Lone Gunmen were fridged or when Mulder left, whichever happened first. I can't even remember that much.)

I actually didn't mind it and I was pleased we got any resolution at all. That's how low my expectations were at that point!

Am I the only one who read this as the A Files because of the font

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That top half of the X is pretty light

Re: Am I the only one who read this as the A Files because of the font

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope! I saw it that way as well at first then checked again because I figured it HAD to be X instead of A. But it did take a second look to see the top half of the letter.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my God, talk about dredging up a long-forgotten anger/disappointment. Haven't thought about this in years!
Honestly that show was great because of the characters/actors (I had such a crush on Skinner) and the MOTW episodes. I never cared for the "main" plot.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
We need more Skinner appreciation <3

Eh.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
After about the 27th red herring (or thing that wasn't a red herring, but didn't actually make much sense even in context), I think I stopped expecting they would come up with a truly satisfying resolution.

Re: Eh.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeeep. It's a good thing I stopped trying to understand what was going on in the overarching plot and just focused on the characters.

WOW

(Anonymous) 2021-04-19 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I had actually forgotten what they eventually found out happened to Samantha. I had to look it up, and then it sounded vaguely familiar. I guess there was just that much "Lucy with the football" type stuff with her.
