I try really hard to not care about when other people like things I don't, but for some reason it drives me absolutely insane when there's a popular fic in a large fandom that's really bad? I don't just mean it has a ship I don't like, but it's got bad grammar and spelling, bad characterisation, bad pacing, just bad everything! I get so fixated on being mad about it, and trying to work out what the hell anyone is actually reading it FOR.
I saw one the other day for 'The Untamed' where most of the canon characters were turned into dickheads, the protagonist was a defenseless woobie, and after over a decade of being abused his 'super awesome totes protective' friends from the crossover fandoms turned up and brutally murdered everyone. Starting with a bunch of bunny rabbits. I'm not making that up. And that was supposed to be a happy ending? Like, what the fuck?

Honestly is it bad if that plot description feels like a huge old school fandom throwback to me? I feel like, I saw so many fics with that general vibe back in the day, it's almost nostalgic

*deep sigh* No, no, it reminds me of reading fanfic back in the early 2000s too - woobies and making characters into mustache-twirling villains and the damn monologuing... I've even run into a few fics recently that had images inserted into the middle of the text as 'here's what this character is wearing', which gave me full on Quizilla flashbacks.
Except I didn't like that era of fic very much, and I'm really not thrilled at people resurrecting it! At least I can filter out all the InuYasha smut nowadays...

JMO here, but some fics just hit the spot, even if they are badly written. It's like junk food for the fic reader.

I like a lot of stuff that I think of as junk food fanfic - self inserts, soulmates, crazy powerups, ridiculous contrivances, more tropes than you could shake a stick at - but like... okay, to continue the junk food metaphor? I look at the fics I hate, and it's like seeing someone eat a cheeseburger they picked up off the ground. Not even one they dropped themselves! They just walked up, saw it there, and decided to eat it!
There's junk food, and then there's actual rubbish.

DA - in all honesty I’ve probably gobbled down that trash burger more times than I can count. But those were really rare ships. In a popular fandom I don’t get it, you can afford to have standards!

Honestly I think the real truth is that most people’s tastes are actually really, really bad and deep down people just want trashy, terrible shit.

I so get the irrational anger at stuff like this. There's an author in my current fave rare ship who has terrible style (ESL and has the same native language I do so her weird sentence structure is especially grating to me), terribly dumb half-AU plots and the characters are fully unrecognisable with how OOC they are. And she still gets plenty of comments and it baffles me.
