There's only so much "OMG the world needs saving" plots that I can take, it's either too boring and repetitive (if they're poorly done) or too stressful (if they're well done) and I prefer problems on a smaller scale.

To each their own. My favorite thing is when the world, the galaxy, or the universe is in danger. I love big stakes. I love epic scifi and fantasy. They are my favorite thing and I'll never tire of them.

I've never watched/read a huge amount of SFF, but this was why I stopped watching Doctor Who-- it started to feel like each season finale needed to concoct something even more improbably universe-engulfing than the last.

I couldn't agree more. I hate when it's made into a big deal when by logic of these fictional universes, these major dangers are just another day that ends with y.

I don't always mind it, but I do sometimes wonder how much it's going to screw with the expectations of people in those universes.

As in "oh look, an even bigger world ending/galaxy ending threat? The fifth one we've had in a matter of months? Well, it's ok...because The Doctor or The Avengers or whoever will be along any minute now. Any minute now..."

I just don't like when they go for world-saving stakes and then, if there is a continuation, nothing is ever long-term small stakes again.

Eh it depends on context for me. Like the Suikoden series. I really liked that the first two games were basically about regional wars, and while the stakes were high for those involved and there were some really immense powers involved, what was really at stake was (to gloss over the nuances) freedom from tyranny for specific nations.

And then the third game came along and was great until we get to the end and I'm like "....wtf is this? This is not what I expect from Suikoden." I wanted Geddoe to just smack [spoiler] and be like "You idiot kid, I've [spoilered] longer than you've been alive, I think I'd know."

On the other hand, I come into Final Fantasy expecting imminent world (or time/space) destruction. Both are fine.

One of the things I loved most about the Ant-Man movies was that the stakes were comparatively small scale: trying to prevent technology from falling into the hands of people who would use it for harm, and people trying to protect their loved ones. Not everything needs to be about the fate of the universe; sometimes the hero trying to make his corner of the world a bit better place to live is enough.

I do like a 'save the world/universe' plot, but I absolutely agree that not everything needs to be that large-scale all the time and there should be more small-scale fantasy/sci-fi plots too. They're just as fun tbh.

I mean, on the one hand, there are so many versions and iterations of Les Mis out there, what even is canon any more?

On the other hand, I've never yet seen a fanon version of Enjolras that bore even the slightest resemblence to even one of the dozen-or-so versions I've consumed, so... you're not wrong.

If it came out today It might be seen as the savior of the DCCU. It wasn't perfect, but I compared it to movies I really liked. Meanwhile I'd now be comparing it to bunches of movies and trends and franchisees I am so done with. My heart fucking LONGS for some honest heroism and a greedy, menacing villain.

Absolutely. Same goes for Mass Effect and Fire Emblem fics - I care about Jane / John / Robin / Corrin / Byleth, not Evelynn or Adrian or whatever you've picked, because it's usually a pure self-insert without even the bare bones of characterisation the developers originally gave them.

I think it's more that all the food is authentic to the time, but it's like sampling "now" from advertising and dinner parties. Like, I'm old enough to remember the 1970s (and so are they!), and while those were actual foods that people ate, they weren't what you ate frequently! But that wouldn't be as entertaining.
