Dimitri reminds me of too many real life people who have hurt me to like him... And I feel like fandom goes too far out of its way to smooth over his numerous flaws because they see a sad white boi they want to save (and by save I mean healingly fuck) that it just. His entire Thing squicks me. His entire route just felt, IDK, like it didn't address any of the underlying issues, either, and was just giving Miss "I wanna fuck my mom and revive her from the dead no matter the cost and will literally raze continents and pursue eugenics to do it" everything she wanted BUT Byleth... It sure as fuck felt like it was gonna keep up the Human Breeding Program she set up.

Yeah, I won't be persuading anyone to like Dimitri - AM is my favourite route, but the best part of having multiple game routes is that there's no one best option and if you've got unpleasant associations with a character you can avoid them.

I like messy characters, and I like messy relationship dynamics. I don't like tacked on villains like TWSITD (and THAT was certainly a choice for a name), but I'm glad Rhea wasn't the big bad because she was messy, not evil. Did she push her daughter/homunculous to breed with Jeralt in an effort to ressurect her mother with the intent to sacrifice her deliberately, or did she genuinely feel for her daughter/failed attempt in the middle of a difficult childbirth and obey her wish for her baby to survive out of love? Who knows! She's messy!

Is Edelgard a puppet of TWSITD or is she using them? Is she against their methods, or just against the targets of their methods? Is the world she's selling the one she's working towards? Who knows! She's messy! I mean, is she enthusiastically for genocide of the Nabateans or is it just a side effect of her plan?

I think my favourite part of this game is that nobody is squeaky clean, everyone is at least a bit terrible, and there's no One True Path Where Good Triumphs Over Evil.

I think both statements about this:

Did she push her daughter/homunculous to breed with Jeralt in an effort to resurrect her mother with the intent to sacrifice her deliberately, or did she genuinely feel for her daughter/failed attempt in the middle of a difficult childbirth and obey her wish for her baby to survive out of love?

Can be true to a point, and given what I've seen of the Ashes DLC I'm pretty sure it's the former that moved into the latter, because I think she even mentions kind of resenting Jeralt and not just for taking away Byleth.

Same with Edelgard and TWSITD. I do think they made A Choice ending CF early and not showing Edelgard going after them with even more vigor than she did Rhea, who yeah, is unfortunately the root cause of a lot of the systems TWISTD seemed to be using societally to move around and gain power.
