Yeah, I'm with you there, and I'm not even Russian (I'm Polish).

I'm not sure why is it okay for an American author to borrow so much from one place/culture/language, without doing any proper research, and pass it on as some clever fanstasy world-building just because her main target audience doesn't know better. She apparently claims that it's not really Russia, so it doesn't have to be really accurate - fair enough, but then she should have done the work and changed more things/invented some new vocabualry instead of just borrowing random words.

I think Clockwork Orange did it better, tbh, because in Clockwork Orange the implication was that there was some sort of natural language melding, not just flinging in non-English words to make things sound mystical.

Yeah, that's fair. It works for me, because I don't know Russian, but I could totally see how it'd be irritating and distracting as hell for someone who did.

I haven't read Shadow and Bone or any of the other books in the series, but I don't know enough about Russia to know if Catherynne Valente's Deathless, Katherine Arden's The Bear and the Nightingale and sequels, or Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver do a better job at incorporating Russian or at least Eastern European folklore.

But they're all adult books and I think Shadow and Bone is YA, not that that excuses (mis)using Russian names and vocabulary.

I'm not Russian but another show I watch has a villain whose last name is Kolya, and every single time the heroes talk to him I'm like "so... you... you like him? Why would you use the- oh, right."

Do they like....highly powder the actors in these kinds of shows? There skin is always so smooth and pale. But not in a good way. A weird, flat way.

I have to say that most of my slash ships are two white guys. It's weird and I wonder if there's something racist about it, but there we are.

My het ships often have a woman of color though. So I guess I can identify just fine with a female protagonist who's not white, and I think the characters are beautiful.

I'm white and bi. Maybe I have a thing for WOCs only.

I find it hard to ship Turk/JD in the show because they have one of those super close relationships where if the gay thing were gonna come up and be a thing, it would've come up and been a thing already. They even literally address it from time to time confirming it's not a thing. It's hard to see how, if it were going to come up at all, it'd suddenly be a new development after all this time.

Fwiw I don't ship either of them with anyone else, and have no ships in Scrubs, so it's not that I ship other things. And I'd be down for AU fic of JD/Turk or it happening in the past or whatever. I just can't see it in a canon-compliant fic, or ship it in the show itself.
