"When AMVs used to be a thing" ...huh? They still are a thing. If anything, I'd guess they're probably more popular now that video editing software is way more widespread than it used to be.

Anyway, I never watched DBZ AMVs, but there are a lot of songs I associate with AMVs or with certain anime because of them, and Linkin Park songs are up there, so I feel you. Though I don't think anything will top wake me up inside, wake me up inside, call my name and save me from the dark.

I remember those days. They were glorious.
The song I most associate with DBZ is 3 Doors Down's "Kryponite", because of a well-done AMV.

many moons ago...I want to say 07? 08? A con had a bad AMV contest - as in, you had to submit an AMV you made that you deliberately made to be bad, no sporking only self-referential shit. I don't remember most of the entries but I distinctly remember the most widely-used Linkin Park song using the same 20ish second clip of DBZ repeated over and over and over and over and over for the length of it. With the subtitles left on. I wasn't even a regular consumer of AMVs but I got the point very easily that this was A Thing.

not DBZ, but there was a really good One Piece AMV set to In the End that still makes me think of it when I listen to the song

I still think back to one AMV that had 3 Days Grace's "I Hate Everything About You" for a Sinbad/Rowena pairing (yes, that early 2000s live action Sinbad show that also had Maeve, who was an Irish lady pirate lol,) and a Xena/Ares shopping video to a dark cyber techno song "You're a Disease"
