Movies you like for the aesthetic

(Anonymous) 2021-05-06 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there movies you like for the aesthetic even though the plot is at least a little weak and not your favorite?

As much as I hate Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, I do rewatch the first & second movie from time to time for the character designs and outfits Alice wears.

Also X the movie - its flawed as hell but its so pretty and the end theme still makes me emotional.

Same for X the Movie.

I just watched this ridiculous fantasy movie called The Great Wall. The plot is ridiculous and basic. But the movie looks so pretty, and the music is nice too. It was actually enjoyable to watch just for the pretty.

Jupiter Ascending is another movie that I love for the look of it.

The Warcraft movie's plot actually wasn't terrible, it just wasn't great. But the movie looks good, really good. Same with Pompeii. Not great plot, but not completely awful. And the visuals are really good and help make it enjoyable.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The plot mostly consists of a dodgy love story and a movie-long chase interspersed with fight scenes, culminating in a castle fight with a boss. Absolutely nothing noteworthy in it. But damn if the movie isn't absolutely gorgeous.

Like for visuals? A lot of pastoral English crime series, some Jackie Chan movies, Chocolate Factory and Moulin Rouge.

The Fall and The Cell by Tarsem Singh. Granted, I do love the story of The Fall.

https://youtu.be/v1ZvIHNVNjM

The Cell has a much weaker plot (and acting my Jennifer Lopez) but some amazing visuals. They can also be very disturbing to to the subject matter.

Eiko Ishioka's costume designs are always awesome!

Seconding The Fall. That movie is absolutely gorgeous and criminally underated. The Cell is also amazing.

oh shit yeah The Fall, epic costuming and visuals, can't remember for the life of me a single thing about the actual movie itself.

Hmmm... Legend. I fucking hate Tom Cruise and the movie is dumb as hell. But there’s something about all the shit floating around in the air and the beautiful sets and the unicorns. Also, Tim Curry love totally balances out the Tom Cruise hate.

I love the look of that movie, too. Unicorns!

I like that movie too, partly the look, but mostly Tim Curry. I hate Tom Cruise too, and Legend is one of only two Cruise movies I like (the other being Edge of Tomorrow).

I recall loving the look and style of Lucky Number Slevin, despite it being not a particularly great movie overall. Actually, Paul McGuigan's directing in general tends to win me over. I think it was a significant part of what made Push so much fun, despite the movie's weaknesses—though I do also like Push for the story as well, not just for the aesthetic. Hell, I actually think McGuigan's on-point directing was a big part of what made Sherlock seem so much better than it was in the beginning.

I think Sleepy Hollow is an awful movie, but it does have some amazing aesthetics - cinematography, lighting, costumes and makeup.

I do genuinely like Legends of the Fall, but, like, half of that is probably due to how gorgeous it is.

I feel like The Natural is actually a good movie, but it isn't one I could ever really get into. It is very pretty though, with some truly stunning shots.

The Mexican, Fool's Gold, The Royal Tennenbaums, The Eyes of Laura Mars, Cabaret, The Rose, Little Darlings, Foxes, Valley Girl, and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote was a disappointing film that looked good

Tron and Tron: Legacy, both the visuals and the soundtracks.

Oh, hell, I'll throw in Alien 3. If only because the original trilogy weakly maps to Beowulf.

Speedracer! Bright colors! Pretty! Fast stuff!

There are a couple Studio Ghibli films that I'm not super into the story (ex Arriety) but all those films are so unbelievably gorgeous.

Book of Life.
