Hahahahaha

Great secret, and yes sweet potato pie is delicious

(Anonymous) 2021-05-15 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Does it taste like pumpkin? I love pumpkin pie but dislike sweet potatoes as a side dish.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-15 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but sweet potato pie often uses similar spices as pumpkin pie, but it's the texture that's the biggest difference. Pumpkin pie is almost like custard, sweet potato pie is much more dense, like mashed potatoes.

They're very similar but there are slight differences. Pumpkin pie is basically all about the spices and sweetness. But because sweet potatoes actually have flavor and sweetness of their own, you get more of a balance of flavors, with the spices playing off the natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes, and also a slightly different texture

FWIW I also really dislike sweet potatoes as a side dish but I love sweet potato pie

Have you ever had savory sweet potatoes? Instead of sweet spices/sugar, you roast them in the oven with a little olive oil, garlic salt, things like that. I discovered i really like that.

I love savory sweet potatoes, too. They're especially good with curry powder!

I put garlic, paprika, and turmeric on mine, plus the olive oil. I usually roast them in the same pan as the chicken.

I've only ever had savoury sweet potatoes; I didn't even know sweet potatoes with sugar/in desserts were a thing until I went to America and a waitress offered me butter and sugar on the baked sweet potato I had ordered as a side to some chicken tenders. Outwardly I was like, "Just butter please!". Inwardly I was like, "Sugar? On a potato? What is wrong with you?!"

Heeee!
If it's done right, sugar and cinnamon and brown sugar on them *does* taste good, but only in moderation. And NO gross marshmallows.

Lol Sweet potato is one of my favorite pie flavors, so I'm happy you tried it out and enjoyed it.

I could be wrong about this, but I feel like sweet potato pie isn't much of a thing in west-coast Canada? I've just literally never noticed it in a grocery store, though I see pumpkin pie all the time. And nobody has ever made it for a Christmas or Thanksgiving or Easter dinner I was attending. I've just basically never encountered it, at all.

I'd like to try it though. I do love pumpkin pie.

Also, I have so much love for all these X-Files secrets someone's been posting. Moose & squirrel 4evar. That is all.

It's more of a southern thing, but the territory is expanding now that sweet potatoes are getting more and more popular outside of the ubiquitous sweet potato/marshmallow abomination that's popular at Thanksgiving.

So many pies to try! Pie in the US sense (sweet with no crust on top) isn't much of a thing where I live, so I was always amazed by all the varieties here (and in Twin Peaks which this scene is parodying). Like, are there enough people to eat a whole pie in one day? Or does it not go stale?

(Anonymous) 2021-05-16 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
We also have lots of pies that are sweet and *do* have a crust on top. Even more pies to try!

(Anonymous) 2021-05-16 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
IME, pies are more for big holiday gatherings and they're good for a couple days but the crust can get soggy or stale over time. We also have both single AND double-crust pies, but it depends on what kind of pie. Sweet potato is generally single crust, as is pumpkin. Apple, cherry, peach, blueberry, strawberry, strawberry/rhubarb tend to be double crust, but there are "dutch" versions of apple and peach pie that has a streusel crumb topping instead of a pastry crust. Lemon and coconut pies are single crust, usually with a meringue topping.

Pies that are custardy like this are better stored in the fridge for the few days it takes to eat them. I like pumpkin pie warm...ish so I put in the microwave for 30 seconds or so.

Same with cherry, etc. Warm pie!

Exception is lemon or key lime. Those have to be cold. And coconut cream. Now I wish I had pie.

I WAS JUST THINKING OF THIS EPISODE RIGHT BEFORE I CAME HERE!!

I was not thinking about the sweet potato pie but about the Alex Trebek cameo, but still.

OT: One random fact I learned last winter. The relative popularity of Pumpkin v. Sweet Potato pies was used as a proxy war between abolitionists and slaveowners in pre-Civil War US.

I love the marshmallows :( but i understand that why the pie would see much better to you.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-16 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with you about the marshmallow-y casserole, but my sister introduced me to a sweet potato casserole with pecan topping that is absolutely amazing.
