My cat was born in 2007. About six or eight months after she was born, I came home from work where my then-wife and I were living with her parents. My cat was laying in her bed with a cone around her head and I was like "WAIT WHAT HAPPENED I WAS ONLY GONE FOR EIGHT HOURS!" Turns out my evil then-mother-in-law had taken her to the vet and had her declawed while we were both at work. She's never had issues walking or jumping, though obviously she can't climb. But she doesn't seem to realize anything is wrong with her, thankfully at least. It's horrible. She has to have a special litterbox, she doesn't make biscuits, and hardly ever sleeps with her legs stretched out. After 35 years of having cats, it's the worst thing I've seen so casually done to one. Her defense was "oh she'll claw my new sofa and I don't want her to be aggressive." As though there can be a defense. My cat is 15 now and healthy and strong but she could have had a much better life if someone hadn't stolen her chance to be whole. (And the woman would later go on to get two cats of her own and have them front-declawed only, again)

That woman is evil. I hope you never have to talk to her again. And I hope her child/your former spouse let her know exactly how awful she was so you had backup.

Oh we had a huge row and almost lost our home over it at the time. She had PLANNED IT. Scheduled the appointment with the vet, even took time off of HER work to have done when we would both be at our jobs all day. And yes, she is evil and I never speak to her or her daughter anymore, for which I am much better off, I know. My little girl is thriving though. She's a miracle case in that there doesn't seem to be any lasting damage so far. She just can't do certain things the way most cats can but she never knew the difference because she was far too young when it happened. She just doesn't use her paws PROPERLY and I know that but I guess she doesn't remember or has just decided she doesn't mind. But it's heartbreaking to watch the lack of movement in her paws sometimes when she's sitting with you or braced for a jump or something. My poor little girl. I hate that woman, I'm not even sorry to say. She is a defenseless animal that is in our care and she mutilated her. Some things you just can't forgive.

Nope, you can't forgive when they abuse our precious animals. I feel this way about the people at the ranch where my kitty lived before I got her. They abused her for wanting to be an indoor cat who was loved by someone. They forced her to have a liter of kittens when she was still a kitten herself and then were angry at her when she wasn't able to care for them. She had a run-in with a lawnmower at some point clearly, because she's still absolutely terrified of them. She's also scared of cages and other small spaces, so something happened there. I saw them kick her and yell at her and threaten to dump her in the woods. My parents want me to forgive them, but I can't. They hurt the precious Joanna who just wanted to be loved. They are evil.

:( I'll never understand how people can treat animals like that. How broken are they that they can act so evilly???

I genuinely don't know. These people just wanted cats at their ranch to look cute for guests and to kill rodents and things. They didn't want to have to worry about the cats or do much for them. So when my girl wanted to be someone's cat, instead of being decent people they were selfish and lazy and abused her.

Thank you for giving her a wonderful life, and for continuing to do so.

Thanks. I try the best I can. I just hope she's happy. I think she is. She saved my life as much as I saved hers, so we make a good team.

So sad for your kitty. That was fucking evil. I hope they outlaw it world wide.

OT: Love your icon and username. Perhaps Hannibal should serve up cat declawers for dinner. We should try to eat the rude after all!

I am volcanic with rage on your cat's behalf. I'm so glad you're taking such good care of her.

I just feel so guilty about it every. single. day. It's not fair - she didn't do anything to deserve to be mutilated like this and I am still incensed that it was done literally behind my back and without my consent. Even my fool of an ex-wife who did whatever her mother told her to knew it was wrong. We'd TALKED about why it was wrong and why we wouldn't be doing it and she did it anyway. She's a monster (and she did it to two more cats, but at least they got to keep their back claws, but poor Brina has none at all, poor lamb).
