No reputable vet in the US still does declaws. If your veterinary practice still does them, switch vets.

Frankly, if I were going to get worked up over unnecessary, "standard practice" animal cruelty in the US, I'd target tail docking and ear cropping in dogs before declawing in cats. Not because they're physically worse, but because a licensed vet that does declaws is basically about as acceptable as a pediatrician who tattoos infants these days, while docking and cropping are still breed standard.

And the unnecessary surgery is still less cruel than continuing to purposefully breed progressively more brachycephalic animals, but the public demand for pets that can't breathe isn't US-specific by any stretch.

Docking and cropping can be about as bad as declawing, since it frequently causes nerve damage and chronic pain for the animal, and tail docking in particular runs the risk of fucking up their spines.
