I have a cat with anxiety problems (born of living alone with me for an extended time before moving in with other cats and people). A few years ago she had attacked both me and my wife; I tried everything I could to avoid declawing because I agree that’s it’s more often done for convenience and that’s wrong. But at that point I was left with the choice of declawing her and assuring she’d be in a loving home or giving her to an adoption place and hoping for the best - with “euthanasia” or “getting declawed anyway” being highly likely outcomes.

I don’t go into cat ownership planning to declaw - we have other cats that are not - but I feel there are circumstances where that’s still the most ethical choice available. Many people are way too casual about it, but that applies to a lot of things.
