Has anyone moved with a cat before? I want to make sure I'm not forgetting anything I can do to make this easier for her.

I'm going to put all her stuff to start with in my room so she has a home base, and then we'll slowly spread out as she gets more comfortable. I've got a med from the vet for her to take before we get in the car that should relax her, and the cage I got for her to ride in is fairly big. She's been enjoying eating treats out of it the past few days. I'm not planning on stopping at all on the drive unless absolutely necessary. And I'm going to spend the next few weeks totally focused on her.

Is there anything else I could or should do for her to make this transition a little easier?

we only moved around town so idk about the road trip but for the new home, having a secure place with her stuff is nice but if she wants to explore, let her. A lot of online tips we read seemed hyperfocused on timid cats, but ours wanted to sniff everything and map out every corner of the new place for herself. The only time we kept her in a room was during the actual hauling of furniture when the doors were wide open, so she couldn't get out. She adjusted immediately so long as she could explore at her own personal pace, so I'd say watch your kitty and see what she wants to do. If she's scared, let her hide in her special room as long as she wants but leave the door cracked so she can explore and sniff if she feels it's safe. make sure stuff with YOUR scent on it is available, as well as her stuff with her scent.

I wouldn't worry about getting Feliway or anything else to calm her down unless she's super nervous or won't come out of a hidey hole for a week, but Feliway is great.

We already have Feliway in the plugin form. We've used it for about a year in our current house, actually, because it does seem to relax her. She's always been a cat who doesn't like change, but those things seem to make it a bit easier for her. And we have some ordered and ready to plug in up in the new house as soon as I get there with her.

Honestly? It sounds like you're doing everything you can. Just keep in mind that a lot of cats really, really don't like changes in their routine. Even if you do everything right she still may be a little distressed and/or upset with you for a few days, but it's just temporary. Go ahead and baby her a little, just don't freak out.

And my Joanna is very much one of those cats. She got sick the last big change we had, which was things being boxed up and moved around so new carpet could be installed. I will be keeping a close eye on her and be focused entirely on her for the next few weeks. My parents are going to deal with the movers and other things like that. My only job is her.

I moved from a small town in Georgia to Seattle, WA with four cats and a dog just before Covid really got a grip in the US. Probably having multiple cats helped me out a bit but the things I did was:

Load them up in the crates (mine were just regular sized crates) with two on top and two on bottom, right behind the driver and passenger seats so that myself or my partner could give scritches.

At each motel (it was a six day drive), set the crates down and give them free rein of the room. Set up a litter box, of course. Let them get comfy, let them do whatever. That way they would assume/treat the crates as eternal prisons; they get to get out and explore a new room each night!

Throughout the day, at every stop, offer food and water. They didn't partake, ofc, but the offer was there.

Once we reached our new home, I basically set their crates down in my bedroom and let them explore. Again, because there were four instead of one, they could egg each other on/gain comfort and courage from each other but I think it's pretty much the same. Definitely spend lots of quiet time with her and make sure she has everything she needs to be comfy.

Cats hate change but they're a lot more resilient than we give them credit for. :3

Philadelphia and NYC questions

Anyone here been to Philly and NYC enough to give me some travel advice?

Philly? No. NYC? Depends on the advice you're looking for.

My sister, her fiance, and I are hopefully taking a trip to DC in October. We will probably take a day trip to Philadelphia and NYC.

Last time we went to DC we also took a day trip to NYC. We went to the Body World exhibition and saw a Broadway show. We will be doing different stuff this time. What would people recommend within the area of Grand Central Station? Both food and stuff to do. We are thinking of going to the MoMa but that is it so far.

Okay, so, I've only been to New York a handful of times. But I do have a couple of favorite things that are decently near Grand Central Station I believe. The Morgan Library and Museum is great. It is both a museum and a research library, and they usually have really interesting, varied exhibits.

The Transit Museum was something both my dad and I loved, but it is currently closed. If it is open again when you go, it would be worth checking out if you are at all interested in history.

I love the Zoo, but that's a little further than MoMa, so it depends on how far you want to go.

Thanks! We'll have to see if the zoo in NYC has anything different from the National Zoo.

NYC native here — Bryant Park is right near Grand Central station if you walk up a few avenues. You'll see the famous Stephen A. Schwarzman branch of the New York Public Library with the two lions (you can go in and tour!), and not only are there some great places for shopping (Kinokuniya is one of my favourites), there's usually something going on in the park itself. (I just checked, and they had ping pong today.) It's also just a great place to hang out, either by yourself or with friends.

On the other hand, if you go down the avenues instead to 1st Avenue, there's a long stretch of walkway next to the East River that you can go up and down. I used to walk the 40+ blocks home from my university that way. The skyline at dusk and at night when everything lights up is one of my favourite things about the city, and it's usually quite serene (minus the hum of cars zooming by, of course).

Wow, I showed my sister the pen area at Kinokuniya and she about squealed. She is hugely into bullet journals. Thank you for all the recommendations, especially that store!

No problem! If you're looking for grub, I'd also recommend Xi'an Famous Foods if you happen across one. There used to be one right across from MoMA, but I guess it closed down during COVID. The authentic Western Chinese cuisine is on point and it's NYC exclusive (which is both a pro and a con — a con when I'm out of town and craving it especially, lol).
