I don't know how you'll feel about this...

A Coen brother is doing a 'new take' on the play. The Tragedy of Macbeth will star Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand and be shot in black and white. But it doesn't sound like it will be any more historically accurate. Then again, maybe the witches use that argument to convince him. It should be out this year.

Oh god. A new take on Shakespeare is so freaking overdone at this point. Ugggggh.

True, but the Coen brothers had the most original take on the Odyssey that I've ever seen (O Brother Where Art Thou), so if anyone's going to do it well, it's them.

nayrt - I loved "O, Brother" but it was so different from The Odyssey that it was its own story and that's what I enjoyed about it. I don't think I'd want to see a version of MacBeth that was just the original story with a modern setting, though.

I'd watch it. I've probably had my fill of Shakespeare adaptions of that story, and given I'm only in my 30s, I expect there's more of that to come for the rest of my life anyway. Might as well enjoy something a bit different while I'm here.

I don't want this, only because it will be made a complete hash off and they'll end up having Macbeth fight the English or something because, you know, American TV.

FREEEDOM!!!!

Completely ignoring the way more interesting clan warfare and instead trying to remake Braveheart sounds about right. Gotta grind that 200 odd year old ax.

Oh - I thought historical Macbeth was historical Duncan's brother! Which would make for an interesting take, but not what Shakespeare was going for as regards pandering to James, admittedly.

I read the original comment and honestly doing some research I don't think that's correct OP, just speculated. though I think family intrigue would improve the drama for modern audiences.

I don't think Shakespheare meant it to be actually historically accurate.
