Moving out advice?

(Anonymous) 2021-05-22 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey there, I was wondering if anyone had any advice for how to move out out of state? In my current financial status, I'd need a roommate to help me afford rent. I guess does anyone have any advice for how to find a roommate or find a place to rent where rent alone doesn't take up 90% of my monthly budget?

I've heard this site is pretty good at finding reliable roomies. Better than something like Craigslist. https://www.silvernest.com/

This looks pretty nice! It seems like it's for people over 50, which is definitely cool and good, but I worry that they may not accept me. I'll give it a go, and even if it they don't accept me, I'm happy to find out that this service exists!

Is this for school or a job or...? Because I figure that would be the major factor in apartment hunting.

I'm disabled, so there's nowhere specific I have to pick. The downside is being disabled, and not having enough of a monthly budget to live independently. ^^;;

Learn Esperanto and take advantage of Pasporta Servo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasporta_Servo).

(this is half a joke but I am considering learning Esperanto just so I can use this).

Ooh, Esperanto is pretty cool, and I had no idea that the community is likewise as cool! I hope you have fun and luck with your journey, anon! :D

Is this an urgent situation where you need to get out of where you're at right away? If not, it sounds like you're getting way ahead of yourself. Step back and figure out where you would like to move, and what sort of assistance you would qualify for as someone new to the state (especially important if state assistance pays part of your current living expenses). Once you've pinned it down, you can start looking at rental boards tailored to the area you're looking to move to.

Somewhat urgent. I've been trying for a long time to get away from an unhealthy home environment, and have called 211 phone numbers to ask for advice about how to find housing as a disabled person. So far, the only that I've heard so far are section 8 housing vouchers(?), and the struggle to apply over and over again for each location that can have years long wait times.

I admit that I find filling out applications to be demoralizing, and that I'm not sure if this is the only chance I have to get into a better home situation. If anyone knows a bit more info, please let me know. I think that splitting an apartment with a roommate sounds quicker and doable.

I don't even know rental boards are tbh.

SA

I'll say that it's not a life-threatening situation, it's just not great for my mental health.
