So you want historic westerns but don't want them based anywhere in the reality that was the old west? Don't white wash my indigenous ancestors' history to suit your modern sensibilities. It is offensive to the struggles they faced and still face.

IDK I feel like there are stories you can tell set in the American West between 1870 and 1900 that aren't about settler-native relations

I think op was going more along the lines of having the narrative not come from a place of racism or sexism, friendo

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but that's a very sensible, rational interpretation of the secret, which says nothing about erasure. But I had guess it's not as fun as assuming the worst about the OP, for some people.

It feels like you're really determined to be offended here and I'm not sure why.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
You might wanna sit down, because this is clearly going to come as a surprise, but you can tell stories about people who have been subjected to racism without being racist about it.
Also, if we're gonna talk about 'whitewashing', consider how many classic westerns have black or indigenous cowboys, versus the actual real world numbers of same. I'll give you a hint: the real 'wild west' was a lot less pasty than the Hollywood version.

OP

I'm not sure if you're trolling or genuinely in such a rush to be offended that you don't care that you're putting words into my mouth. I guess I'll spell it out for you: older westerns frequently contained some problematic bullshit, such as exaggeratedly macho man roles, limited roles for women as damsels in distress, etc. and super racist portrayals of minorities. I don't want any of that.

Maybe try to be chill about accusations of whitewashing and erasure of indigenous history when no such things have been suggested. It'll be better for your blood pressure in the long run if you don't go looking for reasons to be offended and then invent "evidence" when there isn't any.

I'm also confused about the comment writer, OP, because the westerns were SO whitewashed. Cowboys were mainly Latino and Black!

I want this too, nonny!

(Have you checked out the US television miniseries Centennial? You might enjoy it, its the story of the town Centennial, Colorado, from the first Native Americans to the "modern times" of the 1970s, this series was made in 1978. Its a good modern Western, imo.)

There's an amazing Western from East Germany called "Son of the Great Bear" that I would love to see adapted with an actual Indigenous cast.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Have you seen Slow West?

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
No... I'll check it out, but I'm not a big fan of Michael Fassbender.

I would like some of that, too. It's still got some 'issues', but 'Ride with the Devil' (based on the novel 'Woe to Live On' by Daniel Woodrell) was really good, and different. Civil War, so of course there is some racism, but it's more about how friends and family deal with this war that is dividing them.

The language in the novel (and in the movie) is amazing and different, and over all it's just a really well-shot and well-acted story.

'Dead Man' (film) is also extremely different and interesting.

"Dead Man is generally regarded as being extremely well researched in regard to Native American culture. The film is also notable as one of the rather few films about Native Americans to be directed by a non-native and offer nuanced and considerate details of the individual differences between Native American tribes free of common stereotypes.

The film contains conversations in the Cree and Blackfoot languages, which were intentionally not translated or subtitled, for the exclusive understanding of members of those nations, including several in-jokes aimed at Native American viewers. The Native character was also played by an Indigenous Canadian actor, Gary Farmer, who is a Cayuga."
