So you want historic westerns but don't want them based anywhere in the reality that was the old west? Don't white wash my indigenous ancestors' history to suit your modern sensibilities. It is offensive to the struggles they faced and still face.

IDK I feel like there are stories you can tell set in the American West between 1870 and 1900 that aren't about settler-native relations

I think op was going more along the lines of having the narrative not come from a place of racism or sexism, friendo

nayrt but that's a very sensible, rational interpretation of the secret, which says nothing about erasure. But I had guess it's not as fun as assuming the worst about the OP, for some people.

It feels like you're really determined to be offended here and I'm not sure why.

You might wanna sit down, because this is clearly going to come as a surprise, but you can tell stories about people who have been subjected to racism without being racist about it.
Also, if we're gonna talk about 'whitewashing', consider how many classic westerns have black or indigenous cowboys, versus the actual real world numbers of same. I'll give you a hint: the real 'wild west' was a lot less pasty than the Hollywood version.

OP

I'm not sure if you're trolling or genuinely in such a rush to be offended that you don't care that you're putting words into my mouth. I guess I'll spell it out for you: older westerns frequently contained some problematic bullshit, such as exaggeratedly macho man roles, limited roles for women as damsels in distress, etc. and super racist portrayals of minorities. I don't want any of that.

Maybe try to be chill about accusations of whitewashing and erasure of indigenous history when no such things have been suggested. It'll be better for your blood pressure in the long run if you don't go looking for reasons to be offended and then invent "evidence" when there isn't any.

I'm also confused about the comment writer, OP, because the westerns were SO whitewashed. Cowboys were mainly Latino and Black!
