[The Green Knight (2021)]

Maybe you want to try the 1991 TV movie version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBEv8xjBJf8

Or the 2002 Welsh animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqJ9sTY31_Q

Though, neither of them have someone like Sam Heughan (the actor that came to my mind with your description) as Gawain (or his voice).

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I was just thinking Sam Heughan as well!!!!

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I do see your point, nonny.

Oh man, Dev Patel would be a m a z i n g as Lancelot...

Sorry, but the only way to guarantee filmmakers cater to your specific vision is to finance the film or to be the filmmaker yourself. Otherwise, they do what they want. It isn't about you or your vision. Lots of people have different visions of things. Yours will still exist in your head. But the filmmakers are not required to put that to film.

gee it's almost like this is a place specifically for whining about frivolous fandom stuff

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but the secret doesn't sound like someone who recognizes that their secret is petty. They sound like they're genuinely angry at this casting, and while they say it is a weird hangup to have, they don't talk as if they understand that their dream casting is just theirs. They sound like they genuinely believe that their vision of the characters is the only right one and should influence actual casting.

DA - ...I really didn't get that about the secret. I mean, anytime someone is like "I'm salty about...", I detect a distinct tang of self-deprecation.

Hadn't heard of this movie so I just looked up the trailer and I'm sorry, but there's a talking fox! I'm in for that reason alone. I do agree about Dev Patel being a better match for Lancelot thought.

While I agree that Dev can be charming/intense, to me he doesn't have the acting aesthetic of Lancelot AT ALL, like the way he approaches parts is more galahad than lancelot (and I think emotionally that earnestness is why they thought he was fine for Gawain). and physically I would want a far lankier lancelot, dev's a bit more broad-shouldered for lancelot for me (and again the boxiness is probably why they thought he was fine for Gawain), but I do agree he's a little lankier than I think of Gawain.

OP, what did you think of Ioan Gruffudd's turn as Lancelot in the King Arthur movie with Clive Owen and Mads Mikkelson?

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP

I thought he was spot on for the look.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but as ridiculous as that film was, I love it just because the casting or everyone was perfect to me.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
A good chunk of the early Gawain mythology (leading knight, close to Arthur, most chivalrous, bravest) got transferred over to Lancelot when he was later introduced, so you might find a lot of familiar things despite the name. Gawain got to keep the brothers and the sun god stuff though!

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
You know, the minute I saw Arthurian legend and this picture, i automatically thought "Ah, Gawain". I think he fits the role (in my mind -- my only live action exposure to Arthur was the early 2000s BBC show Merlin, so while I love me some of the actor who played Gawain (Iain...something or other) my Lancelot has to be someone who sort of approximates Santiago Cabrera... Gawain for me has a sort of wiliness, forthrightness, energetic air to him. He'll be the first there in a fight to have your back. Lancelot is more reserved to me, a quiet type of intensity. Not as loud as Gawain's energy. And Dev Patel gives me that Gawain energy.

But physically, I can sorta see where you're coming from, OP!

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
I love Deb Patel, but... Really? They're making the first Arthurian film about Gawain (my favorite knight) and it's going to be this woke fucking shit? For god's sake.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
You're gross.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 08:08 am (UTC)(link)

*eye roll*

Would you be even able to articulate what exactly is getting spoiled by Gawain being played by Dev Patel?

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
He's not white.

It's Arthurian legend. Considering how many adaptations, retellings, AUs, and additions there have been (including prior film adaptations of The Green Knight, just not super recent), complaining about how woke a particular adaptation is is like complaining about adapting Shakespeare with non-white actors. It makes you seem like an ignoramus. Especially when colorblind casting=/=woke. Can he act? Yes? Awesome, I wanna see this.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
To me he looks exactly how I have always seen Gawain...

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Not in any way actually from Britain huh.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-29 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, he is British, so there's that.
