What are your favorite redemption arcs/stories in media?

Inspired by today's Secret #2.

Not sure if this counts, but I really liked Missy's arc in Doctor Who and was a little let down by the way it ended even if it made sense for the Master to do something like that.

It's probably a pretty basic answer at this point, but ATLA Zuko's was just done flawlessly. I think it's probably cause the writers took the time to write his own separate storyline from the get go, and made it slowly unfold to meet the main gang, have his own fallouts and work around his issues in order to be able to join them as a fully renewed character.

Yeah, it's the obvious answer for a reason. Zuko's redemption arc was basically flawless.

I figured someone would beat me to it but, yes, Zuko's arc is pretty much the standard.

Damn, I commented on the secret before I saw this thread. Anyway, still got here before "buhbuhbut Zuko's redemption was a copout because he only did it because of destiny/I didn't pay attention to anything in the show!" anon.

My ATLA experience was very removed from the fandom as a whole. Was this an argument people used back in the day? I've heard the tales of the shipping wars being brutal but not much else.

Nah, it's just one specific anon who frequents here (or used to) and would pop out of the woodwork like they'd been summoned whenever someone said "Zuko" and "redemption" in the same paragraph.

Nux in Mad Max Fury Road for a movie version.

Vegeta from DBZ had a redemption roller coaster (which might be a bit more realistic than a steady one).

Jaime Lannister almost had one. But then season 7 and 8 happened.

Yeah. It was done so much better (so far) in what exists of the books. It'd be nice to see its conclusion but... sigh. Y'know.

Nux was *awesome*!

Rogue in the X-Men where she goes from a minor Avengers villain in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to a hero and X-Man (and eventual Avenger). She has the mutant power fueled Face Turn by absorbing the memories/personalities/powers of a true hero. In 616 it was Rom the Space Knight, but Carol Danvers is often used in adaptation/retcons since she absorbed Carol's powers right before and Rom isn't owned by Marvel any more.

They do a little to ease the transition, when previously she was drawn as a middle aged evil lady she got aged down HARD and was revealed to have been adopted by other super villains and she is brave and self sacrificing and very apologetic moving forward.

Comics love to do this angsty shit where heroes have really dark pasts (ex: Gambit), but they don't often start as actual antagonists.

I can't get past what Rogue did to Carol Danvers.

Re: What are your favorite redemption arcs/stories in media?

Eh, anything beyond the basic knock out was an accident, Rogue was pretty young, Caroll got better after a Space Sebatical as Binary and Rogue really turned herself around after joining the X-Men.

But if you're a huge Danvers fan I understand and you dont ever have to like Rogue. I myself don't care about Danvers in the 616 and just REALLY hope that Rogue is eventually introduced as her villain in the MCU. Otherwise I'm just interested in those movies for Monica.

Vader. And yes, Kylo too. One of the few things good about the last sequel movie was the Kylo redemption part.

Boromir, though he wasn't a villain, his redemption from trying to take the Ring in sacrificing himself for Merry and Pippin will always be epic, perfect, and amazing.

Missy on Doctor Who.

Nebula in the MCU. I loved what they did with her character. Also Yondu in the MCU. It worked for me. I liked Wanda's redemption arc in Ultron, though the tv series ruined her redemption for me.

Zuko's is always great.

Gru in the first Despicable Me movie. Megamind's arc is also great.

Spikes on Buffy wasn't perfect, but it worked for me. And they did a great job with Faith too on both Buffy and Angel.

In Star Trek, I loved Damar's redemption arc on DS9.

Seconding both Spike and Faith. They both worked in their own ways, IMO. Ohh, very much seconding Nebula! And, of course, Zuko, always.

The part I dislike about Kylo's redemption is I feel like the character we got in the last ~20 minutes of the movie would've been so much more interesting than the one we had for the majority of the ST.

Of course you like Fuck-off Ren's nonexistent "for twuuuuu wuuuuuuub" arc.

Okay? Not sure why someone having an opinion on something offends you. For the record, I don't at all ship Kylo/Rey. What I like about the arc is not "true love" (which isn't what happened), but that what finally gets through to him is her act of compassion, using the Force to heal him. That scene wasn't a romance to me, at all.

What's your damage lmao Kylo Ren killed his father, not yours.

You don't have to agree with someone's opinion, but there's no need to attack the person.

Zuko is the most obvious answer and already mentioned but his is probably still my top redemption arc, it's just crafted really well with steps forwards as well as back. He wasn't even my fave character but I found myself rooting for him to change and was glad when he did.

I loved Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing's versions of redemption too, which are less about doing better for the world, and more about finding personal peace for themselves after the bad things they've done(deliberate or forced by circumstance) and finding solace together.

Michael in the Good Place is a very interesting one.

Londo in Babylon 5 as well.

Arthur Dimmesdale in the Scarlet Letter is a classic redemption, I like it if only because it exemplifies how social redemption is. But I don't actually find it satisfying (as frankly it's meant not to be, lol). Chillingsworth has what I call the Vader redemption, which isn't a redemption at all imo. Hester and Pearl are obviously queens who did 0 wrong.

Beloved has such complex redemptions, I love them.

Simba's redemption in the lion king (I know people will disagree that he had anything to redeem himself for, but I do think the framing of this story is redemptive).

Groundhog Dog is really good example of redemption for small stakes, and Liar Liar is pretty good for comedy.
