What are your favorite redemption arcs/stories in media?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-01 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by today's Secret #2.

Not sure if this counts, but I really liked Missy's arc in Doctor Who and was a little let down by the way it ended even if it made sense for the Master to do something like that.

It's probably a pretty basic answer at this point, but ATLA Zuko's was just done flawlessly. I think it's probably cause the writers took the time to write his own separate storyline from the get go, and made it slowly unfold to meet the main gang, have his own fallouts and work around his issues in order to be able to join them as a fully renewed character.

Nux in Mad Max Fury Road for a movie version.

Vegeta from DBZ had a redemption roller coaster (which might be a bit more realistic than a steady one).

Jaime Lannister almost had one. But then season 7 and 8 happened.

Rogue in the X-Men where she goes from a minor Avengers villain in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to a hero and X-Man (and eventual Avenger). She has the mutant power fueled Face Turn by absorbing the memories/personalities/powers of a true hero. In 616 it was Rom the Space Knight, but Carol Danvers is often used in adaptation/retcons since she absorbed Carol's powers right before and Rom isn't owned by Marvel any more.

They do a little to ease the transition, when previously she was drawn as a middle aged evil lady she got aged down HARD and was revealed to have been adopted by other super villains and she is brave and self sacrificing and very apologetic moving forward.

Comics love to do this angsty shit where heroes have really dark pasts (ex: Gambit), but they don't often start as actual antagonists.

Vader. And yes, Kylo too. One of the few things good about the last sequel movie was the Kylo redemption part.

Boromir, though he wasn't a villain, his redemption from trying to take the Ring in sacrificing himself for Merry and Pippin will always be epic, perfect, and amazing.

Missy on Doctor Who.

Nebula in the MCU. I loved what they did with her character. Also Yondu in the MCU. It worked for me. I liked Wanda's redemption arc in Ultron, though the tv series ruined her redemption for me.

Zuko's is always great.

Gru in the first Despicable Me movie. Megamind's arc is also great.

Spikes on Buffy wasn't perfect, but it worked for me. And they did a great job with Faith too on both Buffy and Angel.

In Star Trek, I loved Damar's redemption arc on DS9.

Zuko is the most obvious answer and already mentioned but his is probably still my top redemption arc, it's just crafted really well with steps forwards as well as back. He wasn't even my fave character but I found myself rooting for him to change and was glad when he did.

I loved Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing's versions of redemption too, which are less about doing better for the world, and more about finding personal peace for themselves after the bad things they've done(deliberate or forced by circumstance) and finding solace together.

Michael in the Good Place is a very interesting one.

Londo in Babylon 5 as well.

Arthur Dimmesdale in the Scarlet Letter is a classic redemption, I like it if only because it exemplifies how social redemption is. But I don't actually find it satisfying (as frankly it's meant not to be, lol). Chillingsworth has what I call the Vader redemption, which isn't a redemption at all imo. Hester and Pearl are obviously queens who did 0 wrong.

Beloved has such complex redemptions, I love them.

Simba's redemption in the lion king (I know people will disagree that he had anything to redeem himself for, but I do think the framing of this story is redemptive).

Groundhog Dog is really good example of redemption for small stakes, and Liar Liar is pretty good for comedy.

What are some of your recent purchases?

I got a sampler of fancy salt for my spouse. I got him some black salt for Christmas (it's collected off of the lava beaches in Iceland or something) but he didn't use it because he wanted to save it for something special. So I bought him three 7 different salts in four different colors (white, pink, red, and black) so he'll feel more comfortable using some of it now that it's not as special.

Bought a Moomins shirt for my brother, a Kokia cd that I realized too late was coming from Japan and a pair of cute socks with pink fire all around the sides.

Cool, I really want some of those for my fandoms too! Love those with beads and pompoms personally.

Nothing fandom-related lately because I've been short on money (and no cons means we pay shipping). I want a lot of things, I just don't have the courage. My last purchases were a few manga volumes, 2 manga magazines that had drama CDs for furoku and a kpop album months ago. I have many similar things saved for... someday. Almost impulse-bought the OKHC manga collection recently ngl.

another 40 bucks worth of plants

work supplies and groceries but nobody needs to care about that

the only real indulgence I've had all year has been a silicone chestplate for cosplay, which is awesome but I still don't know when I'm going to get to test drive it in the wild. On the flip side I also haven't spent money on more fabric and supplies for new costumes because why should I? I don't know when I'm going to even wear one again and I've got three or four in progress since the before times anyway.

Other than groceries, last thing was my belated birthday presents of a bunch of stuffed bunnies and two bunny tank tops. Only one has arrived yet, everything else is either from overseas or print-to-order, but the other bunnies are apparently one state away now. :D

Oh but with the groceries, I picked up a new mat for the bathroom floor. The old one was... well, old, and more than one elderly cat had peed on it through the years when it was too difficult for them to get in and out of the litterbox a few feet away, and the mat never was quite the same after having been washed a few times. New one is soft and fluffy and feels much nicer on my feet.

Firefox updated their UI

I have not noticed much different except that the space between links in your bookmarks/favorites is HUGE. So normally my bookmarks would open and be half my screen but now I have to scroll.

Vegetarians/vegan who went back to eating meat question

(Anonymous) 2021-06-02 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
After years of being a vegetarian, I ate chicken twice over the weekend. And... they definitely tasted like chicken and I didn't like it.

Did other people of the veggie persuasion lose their taste for meat or was it just that maybe the dishes?
