It happens, OP. I really, really hate zombies, but several online friends of mine and at least one RL friend thinks they are awesome.

Same. Hate zombies. Don't get the appeal.

...Then I have a project where "dead girl must solve own murder" and I have to remind myself "She is a golem run by gemstones and magic, not a zombie. She doesn't eat brains." Like, my dad can't tell the difference, and I'm going "No, BIG difference, less cannibalism, no decaying, more mystery solving!"

It's the semantics that keep me going.

Golems are interesting in a way zombies are not, IMHO.

My best friend, light of my life, would marry her if we were sexually compatible, HATES HATES HATES zombies. I think they're the greatest thing since Betty White.

You don't have to have 100% cookie cutter interests to be friends with people.

Oh absolutely.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-08 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just amused by how much sense your lesbian examples make to me. And by the fan art.

I don't understand how anyone can hate vampires but it'd be a funny old wolrd if we were all the same

My thoughts exactly.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-08 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
for me it's partly the oversaturation. I will instantly hate anything oversaturated.

but if there's a context, I'm sure I have a more nuanced explanation. in terms of monsters? they're not that scary. they're easy to avoid. they pass easily as human and aren't really monstery. the mythologies agree even less than zombie mythology so I can't even pick one that kind of sounds neat. I guess it boils down to vampires being boring even outside of oversaturation? something like that.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think they're scary, but I do think they're spooky, and sexy, and interestingly metaphorical, and that matters a lot more to me than scary. And I find the ability to pick and choose the mythology interesting.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
then, monster preferences come down to what one wants out of the monster, no? whether you want it scary, intimidating, and idk other things, vs sexy and weird? I can get with that. we can definitely agree to disagree on vampires since we clearly want different things from our monsters.

As someone who loves vampires in fiction, ITA with all of this.

The build-your-own aspect of vampires is honestly what makes them so great, IMO. They work however you want them to, and it's all fine. I love that.

amen to that anon.

Tventy-two! Tventy-two knocked out teeth! Ha-Ha-Ha!

I went through a vampire phase for a while. Then I had an english teacher that went "you can't write about vampires for this class." Thus... I'm petty and my werewolf obsession was born. Then vampires became super saturated so why bother writing about them. -shrug-

The Count though is the best vampire still. Then Spike... and then the vampire dad from Hotel Transylvania. But err... yeah.

I don't mind vamps, but I guess I still prefer shapeshifters of various types over everything else. Mostly b/c they aren't as used as much in their own isolated worlds. So a lot of my projects now involve shapeshifters.

I like vampires, but I understand why people hate them. They're just freaking everywhere.

Also, your bonus secret made me lol. I like cute and wholesome lesbians too, but a lot of my friends are into the morally ambiguous ones. None of us liked Madoka though.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think I got obsessed with Vampires because 12 year old me got disappointed with the tiny LGBT section I did find at my local library (which to be fair was aimed at a much older audience since YA literature wasn't really a thing to my knowledge at the time let alone queer YA stories) - and found an Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles book nearby because the cover looked cool; which lead to me reading it and found my 'gay' relatable literature in them. So RIP my good taste in anything at the age of 12 lol (although I wish 13 year old me could unread her weird bdsm books - I think they were called the sleeping beauty series or something like that).

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
But there are no cute and wholesome lesbians in Madoka. Even without Rebellion, Homura's obsession with Madoka makes her do evil things and Sayaka and Kyouko are just fucked and tragic.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there’s Madoka herself.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Madoka's only wholesome because she's fucking stupid and has no self-confidence.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I like Johannes Cabal's vampire brother Horst, and I like The Shepherd by Frederick Forsyth, but that's about it for me and vampire stories. And in the second one, the Vampire is a fighter jet. So I sympathize, OP.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
So... it's weird to you that you have friends who don't agree with you on every single thing?

Okay!

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
You know, if the tone of this secret wasn't, "Why do I have friends who dare not agree with me on everything?" I'd be a lot more okay with this, but I see why it's a secret. With the tone in mind, you bit about the lesbians makes me, an actual lesbian, a bit uncomfortable because those "cute, wholesome" lesbians tend to be infanitilized to hell and back, especially in anime.
