Yeah this is the main marker for me, none of the emotional or character beats hit because the story assumes you already know the characters to just dive right on in and that... doesn't work when you don't know them.

Stories like these read like fanfic because they *are* fanfic... of the original characters and world in the author's head that nobody else knows about. And they are writing fanfic about it as though the readers do.

So to the rest of us, it reads like fanfic of a series and characters we've never seen. Because it is!
