"Fanfiction for a show that doesn't exist" is pretty scathing honestly.

Hey, I love fanfiction. Part of the appeal is we already know the world/characters so we can get right to the story. But if we don't learn about the the world/characters than we can't really have a story, you know? It's like reading a wikipedia article. Gee thanks I guess. That's not very satisfying!

The worst part were the weird meme references. Even if I was enjoying a scene, nearly quoting a meme would jerk me out of the book and leave me totally cold.

First, "reads like fanfiction" is neither an insult nor a compliment. It's a neutral descriptive statement. It's a matter of taste whether you want to read that or not.

Second, in my opinion, the first 50 pages or so of Gideon The Ninth is the weakest part of the book, and I can see how you'd say that if all you read is the opening section. So I get where you're coming from if that's all you've read. I don't think it's representative of the book as a whole, though.

It really depends on the character for me. For me I mostly want the character to feel IC. For some characters, I think this is absolutely true and they only have eyes for one person. But for other characters, they can look around and lust even if they only love one person because they can mentally separate sex and love. And then there are still other characters who can have multiple true loves in their life. And then others who never have true love, don't even want love, and just enjoy sex a lot.

What things are you particularly picky about in terms of characterization when you are reading fics in your fandom?

What things, on the other hand, are you not as picky about? Things where maybe there is a range of interpretations and you are cool with that, or things that just don't matter that much to you.

According to Wikipedia (and interviews with the composer):

Director Robert Altman had two stipulations about the song for Mandel: it had to be called "Suicide Is Painless" and it had to be the "stupidest song ever written". Altman attempted to write the lyric himself, but, upon finding it too difficult for his 45-year-old brain to write "stupid enough", he gave the task to his 14-year-old-son Michael, who wrote the lyric in five minutes.

I agree. I actually started the audio book this morning after reading the paperback last year. The beginning is certainly rough, rougher than I remember in terms of character, idk if it's largely the acting in the audiobook, but oof Harrow comes off as a cartoonish villain; but 50 pages is nothing as far as this book is concerned.
I know a lot of people quit early because it's confusing and nothing is explained, but pushing past that and on into the meat of things is so worth it imo.
I completely understand why people put it down, but I can't help but feel they're missing out.

Ooh, I do this haha. I think that's natural when you have an OTP! Of course you only want them to have life-changing feelings and mind-bending sex with each other! I don't know why we're supposed to be all caught up on the "realism" of something anyway. Isn't that the entire point of fiction, to indulge in fantasy?

I wouldn't care that they didn't have extra if the weren't So Expensive. I've been price watching a short series I liked (12 episodes) and it hasn't budged lower than $50.
