Re: Characterization

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe this doesn't count as a characterization problem, but I'm really picky about factual errors regarding characters in fic. Generally, if characterization is poor or everything is badly written, I just backbutton out. I keep running into fics that handle the characters personalities and dialogue well (which makes me keep reading) but then there will be things like, a show clearly depicts a character as living in an apartment, but the fic will portray them as living in a single-family house (or vice-versa), or a minor character has repeatedly mentioned that her husband (who we've never seen) is named Dan but the fic will call him Dave. It's just strange to me that people can nail what I normally think of as the more difficult aspects of fic writing and then fail on the details that could have been checked with Wikipedia or just paying more attention to canon.
