Re: Inspired by 5: What does "reads like fanfiction" mean to you?

I think I view similarly to you. I go in knowing what to expect. There's very little growth but a whole lot of drama for drama's sake (miscommunication or other reasons) and it reeks of one dimensional characters (thinking of one book that I'm pretty sure was Harry Styles fanfic, and no, it's not After lmao, that burning dumpster fire i can't look away from). Tropes up the backend, unrealistic everything for its universe (A hardworking waitress studying journalism in Columbia who has a little apartment in Hell's Kitchen after leaving everything behind in Ohiowatucky -- lmao lady please). It also reads like there was barely an editor around (to question character motivations, plot, SPaG, fluidty and prose, etc.).

In general, when I hear it, I tend to think of it in a pejorative sense. It's gratuitous, self indulgent, and I general think about the poorer fics that people have written (with love, surely, but...it is what it is. And I enjoy the self indulgent stuff and have no qualms about it, but I'm not going to sit here and wax poetic about how great and noble it is). That said, I have read published writing that was just...fanfiction was miles above; it was poorly written, shit pacing, uninteresting characters, etc. And I've read fanfiction that I wish could have been published so I could have a book of it and read it all the time! Incredible character development, plot makes sense and moves at a good pacing, well written, prose is great (or at least to my liking), etc.(so maybe I am waxing poetic. But it's a good time. Some crazy time travel fic where Hermione has to travel back in time and insert herself in Tom Riddle's life -- amazingly written! Characterization is great! Growth and actions of characters right on the money! Is it still self indulgent but amazingly well written? Yes it is!)
