I have to agree with you OP. Dakota is an above-average actress in my opinion, but her skill on screen is in an easy everyman charm and quiet confidence. I can see Dakota as Anne Elliot at the end but not as we begin her story.

That said....this character isn't exactly Anne Elliot as Jane Austen wrote her according to the producers so....you may not like anything about this anyway lol. Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth – the dashing one she once sent away – crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances. https://variety.com/2021/film/news/dakota-johnson-jane-austen-persuasion-netflix-1234955570/. I'm pretty much only watching this because of Henry Golding as Mr. Elliot.

Try the one with Sarah Snook as Anne.

Wow, that bears only a superficial resemblance to Austen's novel and the character. I guess I shouldn't be surprised...

someone said they should have just done an updated modern version a la clueless and i think that would be easier to swallow with this characterization.

I like that one too! I actually am mentioning the Sarah Snook one because apparently they decided to greenlight two persuasions at the same time, so the Sarah Snook one should be coming out at the same time as Dakota's.
