And of course not, it's fanfic, and we write tropey stuff because it's fun.
But almost every person here commenting, plus OP, is saying it's 'not a compliment' and the fic they apparently read has 'no worldbuilding', 'no characterization', 'ooc's', etc.
I try hard *not* to read fic that's crappy, and for the most part, other than tropes like hurt/comfort or A/B/O or whatever, I back-button out of stuff that's written like a third-grader on crack. I don't think that every YA/dystopian/sci-fi/or supernatural novel that's been printed in the last 20 years is based on fanfic, but as someone who's done their best to try and find new authors - a lot of it is just SO FUCKING BAD, so much worse than, say, the majority of stuff in my bookmarks.
Pro-fic has tropes, too, and follows fads, so I don't consider those things 'bad' or 'like fanfic' - just collective unconscious. But publishers desperate to make a buck seem to be pushing out stuff that's from the very bottom of the slush pile, with minimal editing, and it's depressing.
