Re: Just in case anyone knows how to deal with dust mites...?

That's what I thought too, so when I saw what appeared to be dust on a can of disinfectant that I'd just bought and placed on the back of the toilet a few hours before, and upon going "wtf how did that happen" leaned in to get a really good look and saw that some of the little white specks were MOVING, I googled a couple different descriptions and encountered lots of mentions of dust mites, without any other options coming up other than things like no-see-ums, which don't tend to live indoors and also I would know - because those things DO bite and it's painful. An exterminator site even mentioned something about being able to see them more easily if you hold a light at certain angles so you can see the tiny shadows cast on the surface of an object.

But since I also thought you couldn't see dust mites, I kept poring over more and more search results, and came upon a blog where someone was detailing their struggle against dust mites - and a commenter was like "they're so creepy! It's like I have PTSD now because I had an infestation once, and now every time I see dust on anything, I can't stop myself from looking closer and making sure it's really just dust and not moving!" Which is... exactly what I'm doing right now. -_- Fortunately it's so far been only dust everywhere in my house except that corner of the bathroom.

So I could be wrong, these other people could be mistaken that's what they are, but I was unable to find anything else they could be. And frankly I don't care what they are, I just want them gone. :P

That's crazy. I've never heard of that. But if you see them moving, well.....

I have dust *everywhere* 'cause i live with my windows open as much as possible and I'm right on a major road *and* just had about 9 months of a huge construction project going on across the street. And i have cats. So dust and hairballs that make me sneeze my head off when i clean.

Good luck!

Thanks! And my sympathies on the construction. I had a lawn service mowing the yard next door for one afternoon last week and the dust/debris from that was enough to make me not open my windows for the day. 9 months of construction nearby has got to suck. -_-

And yeah, the cat is by far not the worst culprit when it comes to shedding in this house, but it's only me and the cat in the bathroom where these things are. I kind of wonder if I stirred something up when I cleaned and actually dusted that area well a few weeks back, and now I can see them because they had been there but under the layer of actual dust on the disused fancy soaps and lotions and stuff that my partner left behind a few years ago. (At this point I suspect the temporary separation is not temporary and I should really throw them out. :P) In an absence of their old fodder, maybe they migrated down to the cat box... and maybe I should just give up on trying to sanitize it and get a new one, start fresh. :/

Tabaqui - not logged in.

Ha, yeah, maybe it's time to say goodbye to those things. They're probably not worth using at this point, anyway.

Starting over sounds best. New box, a thorough dust/vac/sanitization of every inch of the room, and a good laundering of all towels, rugs, etc. That will probably do the trick.

It was noisy and dusty and a bit of a pain, but at least it's over, yay. The road still causes dust on the regular, but that's the way it is. It's that or never open my windows, which is not acceptable.
