What are some of the most unrealistic character survivals in media?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-28 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
An example is Indiana Jones surviving a nuclear blast in a fridge that is tossed miles.

oh god. Shane Casey in CSI:NY. Having the personality of a Batman villain and being left in the custody of the stupidest cop in the world wasn't bad enough but he falls off a lighthouse and doesn't even get hurt???

Ahahahahahahaha, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of the Crystal Skull.
Side note: I really enjoyed seeing Karen Allen ("Marion") again!

Glenn and the dumpster in The Walking Dead. That was the season I stopped watching.

Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight Rises. Especially with how realistic Nolan seemed to be trying to make it.

Wait, what? Harvey Dent was in Dark Knight Rises? I honestly don't remember that. I thought he was dead at the end of Dark Knight.

for real, skin is kind of an important barrier, even if he managed to survive the explosion.

Frodo and Sam surviving Mount Doom in the movieverse. Because they were right there near the lava and should have been burned just being that close. And then the volcano has a massive eruption after the Ring is destroyed, and there is no way they should have survived long enough for the eagles to get there. This is only in the movie, as the book version makes way more sense.

Lava, both in movies and video games, is never more than "fairly hot and toasty but no biggie unless you actually fall in directly" and it annoys me every time.

Yep, the radiant heat (not to mention the gasses) would have killed them, but we're playing by "Lava is only dangerous if you touch it" rules!

Like 80% of the physically traumatic stuff that happens to non-enhanced superheroes in superhero movies. You really just have to turn off the part of your brain that knows how fragile human beings are. Not that humans don't occasionally survive insane things that absolutely should've killed them; it happens. But most of the time shit just kills us, and I often get frustrated with the way the totally normal, non-enhanced superheroes are treated as though they have the same impossible resilience as the enhanced supers. My brain is like, "NO. They just died at least three times in that one scene alone. AT LEAST."

This is actually one of my big peeves about ensemble superhero movies in particular. You need to scale things up for your indestructible types, sure, but don’t forget to scale it back DOWN for the breakable humans, thank you.

I do agree this is an issue a lot. But on the other hand, some "enhanced" superheroes like Iron Man or Batman aren't actually enhanced apart from technology. Iron Man loses his suit, he's a normal human. Batman's suit really only enhances him to a certain point, he's mostly just really smart. And technology can fail, and does take damage. I feel equally that things like Iron Man's suit should show damage from some of the battles and then Tony should start to get injured inside of the suit.

Kind of related - I was coming here to gripe about Peggy Carter falling on rebar in S2 of Agent Carter. It went through her, and at the end of the episode they took her home, a nurse patched her up, and that was fine?? The next episode did make a point of her not being able to do the rest of the mission, but I feel like the repercussions should have been worse.

YESSSSSSSSSSSS.

Yep, +1 for the flying fridge.

Arya getting stabbed several times in the stomach and then swimming in dirty water, and Jaime sinking to the bottom of a river in full armor and then somehow swimming to the shore a mile away without getting noticed and killed.

I kind of feel like most scenes where a character nearly drowns is unrealistic. I mean, I'm sure the time is just being stretched for the story, but when someone is down in the water for five minutes, panicking and flailing about, and then somehow survives with little to no bad effects, I have to shake my head. But I admit I have a phobia about drowning so maybe it just seems longer to me.

I find it difficult to believe Sherlock Holmes manages to survive literally falling in to the reichenbach falls in the second ritchie movie lol. yeah sure he had the breathing device to hold his breath but my god, the impact of falling? the rocks??? the current??? I'm glad he didn't die, but /how/????
Come to think of it, I wonder the same about the end of nbc Hannibal... But that's a little more open-ended.

Every now and again I watch the short-lived Honest Trailers spin-off about how many Harry and Marvs you'd need to get through those films because the brick bit in the second one alone makes me laugh. Think he'd die about four times in that scene!

You'd need around 10 "lives" for both characters iirc.

Oh, probably everyone in the Fast and Furious universe. But I can't say any of the movies were ever advertised as realistic.

Arya getting stabbed (in the gut!! Literal death sentence) and falling into filthy canal water in Game Of Thrones... and then pretty much just walking it off. There wasn't even a magical explanation for it. She just got sewed up and walked it off, no infection, no healing, nothing. They weren't even trying by that point.

Re: What are some of the most unrealistic character survivals in media?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-29 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was ridiculous. It's not like milk of the poppy does anything except dull pain. If they'd said, for her travels, just in case, she'd drank some potion that prevents or greatly slows infections beforehand, I might believe it. But then there's the matter of the bleeding too...

Tony Stark managing to pull forces that would turn his brain into hamburger in every movie.
