My first surprise N-word joke was in an O. Henry anthology. I understand the idea of historical preservation, but that’s one story I’d just as soon leave in the past. (I’ll also give a dishonorable mention to the ‘80s fantasy series The Taliswoman, where one of the characters suddenly says that bisexuals are monsters and should be killed.)

I just stumbled across the original book cover for Agatha Christie's "Ten Little (N-words)" and that shocked me.

I read the Secret of Chimneys recently and good ol' Agatha really strived to include as many negative racial stereotypes as she could.

Bisexuals in particular,eh?

Interesting. Is it bc we're supposed to be insatiable rape machines or something? What was the reasoning here?

No reasoning specified. One character mistakenly assumes another character is bisexual, a third is shocked and says such a monster would be destroyed, and then the conversation moves on and it’s never mentioned again.

Wow what the fuck.

I mean I'm just left wondering why bisexuals specifically. I mean most people jump straight to 'the gays'

Like what? Did a bisexual kick their puppy or something?

I guess it's pretty sad when your reaction to violent hate against you is confusion as to why they're acknowledging you exist. Smdh

Ngl but same, my kneejerk reaction was, "Wait, why US?"

It's because we can't help humping everything, people, furniture, street signs.....

that’s simply someone afraid of someone else being too sexy a beast

fools, it works way better to eroticize your fears rather than the other way around

Every once in a while I remember reading Dr. Doolittle as a kid, and remembering the SUPER RACIST PART is like a punch between the eyes.

Bertie Wooster of all characters says the N word (for no particular reason) in one of the Jeeves books. It was like finding a turd in a chocolate box.

No! D: Which story? Oh Bertie :(

I don't remember which one (I've read lots of them). I was not happy.

Huh, I also enjoyed BC and was meaning to check out the other works some day.
I mellowed about racist, sexist, ableist and other ists over the years tbh. Still hate underage crippy lit that's still considered the norm by many... Anyway I'd give another chance to a work if it's otherwise good. However throw in too many -isms and use the word "creature" refering to (poor, underprivileged) human being and I'm outta here, the book goes to da bin.

I read The Borrowers recently and was shocked when there is an entire conversation where one character is telling another character that if you're bilingual that you can't read and once you stop being bilingual then you'll be able to read.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-01 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
??????????? what does this actually mean??

[personal profile] rivulet027 2021-07-01 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Discourage kids from being bilingual is my only thought. I was reading an earlier edition so hopefully that bit got edited out later on.

Me, a blingual, reading this: Huh????

I haven't enjoyed any of LM Montgomery's books as much as I enjoyed The Blue Castle. I liked Anne of Green Gables, but I wasn't a fan of any of the other books in the series. I read the Emily trilogy because a friend recommended it, but it didn't jive with me either. I know I read A Tangled Web, but I don't even remember anything about it except that I didn't like it.
