I read The Borrowers recently and was shocked when there is an entire conversation where one character is telling another character that if you're bilingual that you can't read and once you stop being bilingual then you'll be able to read.

Discourage kids from being bilingual is my only thought. I was reading an earlier edition so hopefully that bit got edited out later on.

The rest of the book was mostly fine, that part was very I hope they edited this out in later editions because wtf and it soured that whole thing for me.
